Specify chapters and sections for your items

Items you edit, create, or import are categorized as My Items in your view of the Item Library. You may find it helpful to organize your items by specifying a chapter and section, or other organizational division (if available). This allows you to filter your view in the Item Library for both publisher items and your items in the selected chapter and section.

ClosedDefault chapter associations for My Items

By default, items you copy and edit using the Simple Editor are associated with the same chapter as the original item. Also by default, items you create with the Simple Editor or items you import are associated with the chapter category No Chapter Specified. When an earlier edition course is copied into a course based on a new textbook edition, all My Items are also associated with No Chapter Specified.

Note: Sometimes a printed book contains chapters and sections, but the Item Library organizes the same information into chapters only. ClosedFor example:

A printed chapter might have sections 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3, while the Item Library shows only Chapter 5 (no sections, and no Section menu). Also, some printed books contain other divisions, such as units, modules, topics, or concepts. Mastering uses these divisions and terms when possible.

To specify or change a chapter and section for your item:

  1. In the Filters and Answer Types area, add a check mark in the My Items filter check box.

  2. [Optional] Select or clear any other check boxes, such as for an answer type.
  3. Click Apply Filters.
  4. In the resulting list of items, click the Edit Chapter (or Edit Chapter/Section, if available) link beside the item title.

For books with sections, the link displayed is Edit Chapter/Section.
  5. From the drop-down lists that appear, select the Chapter, and if applicable, the Section.
  6. Click Save.

The item is moved to the chapter/section you selected, and you may need to adjust the Chapter and Section filter selections to see the item.
