Edit availability and due dates for assignments

The following date settings apply to each Mastering standard assignment.

• Available From date is when students first see the assignment on their Mastering Assignments list or Calendar. Unless you change it, this date is set to be one week before the assignment is due.

  To let students know when future assignments are due without making them available for students to work on, use a syllabus.

• Due Date/Time is the date you set when students must complete the assignment to receive full credit.
• Available Until is the date beyond which students can no longer see the assignment. Unless you change this date (which is not recommended), the availability matches the course end date.

  • Available Until dates that match the course end date lets students access assignments for review.
  • If you change the course end date, the Available Until dates are not affected. If you want these dates to match, make changes to the Available Until dates, as well.

Each view of the course's assignments provides different features with specific advantages.

Past due	*PAST DUE* appears in the Due Date/Time column	Past due assignments of any kind have a gray background on calendar dates. (Students don’t see the assignment on their calendar at the time you’re checking the calendar.)
Sort order	Sort by #, Title, Category, and Due Date/Time. With rows sorted by #, change the order by dragging an assignment to a new position.	No sorting. Dated assignments are listed in chronological order. Undated assignments are listed after that in alphabetical order. Adaptive Follow-Up assignments are listed with the Parent assignment.
To assign dates	Sort by #, optionally drag assignments to the preferred instructional sequence, select Edit, enter dates, and then select Save. For Adaptive Follow-Ups You can change the days after Parent, which will be expressed as an actual date when the Parent assignment has dates. More about Adaptive Follow-Up assignments	Display the month when an assignment should be due. Drag an undated assignment to the due date in the calendar. Accept or edit the Due Time, From date (default = one week before the due date) and Until date (default = course end date). Dynamic Study Modules Availability From and Until dates don't apply to assigned Dynamic Study Modules because these modules are available throughout the duration of the course. Parent assignments with Adaptive Follow-Ups You can also accept or edit the days after the Parent assignment to set the due date for the Follow-Up.
To change dates	Select Edit, enter new dates/times, or days after Parent, and then select Save.	Drag a regular or Parent assignment to a different due date. Adaptive Follow-Up assignments You can't drag an Adaptive Follow-Up independently, but you can open its Overview page, and then select Edit Adaptive Follow-Up to change its days after Parent. The From date moves automatically to maintain the same number of days before the due date. The Until date also moves automatically or, if set at the course end date, remains on that date. Dynamic Study Modules Availability From and Until dates don't apply to assigned Dynamic Study Modules because these modules are available throughout the duration of the course.

1. Open assignment in List View.
   • From the Mastering Course Home:
     Select  All Assignments (Assignments area) then choose List View (top left).
2. To sort the assignments, select any column heading that has blue text.

   If you've added new assignments without dates, you can move the assignments into the desired instructional sequence by following these steps:

   1. Select the # column header to sort by assignment number and to make the assignments moveable.
   2. Locate any new, undated assignment(s) at the bottom of the list.

   3. Drag assignments up or down to reposition them. To select a row, either select a drag handle (left) or point in a white space within the row. (Don't select the assignment title.)

      

   4. Select # when you're done moving assignments.
3. Select Edit (top right).

   

4. Select any text box, and then enter the date and time you want to apply to the corresponding assignment, or the days after the Parent for an Adaptive Follow-Up assignment.
5. When you finish making changes, select Save (top right).

• An Adaptive Follow-Up assignment appears on the student Course Home page when the Parent assignment becomes available. However, students can't access the Follow-Up until one of the following is true.
  • The student has completed the Parent assignment, including any practice or extra-credit items in the assignment.
  • The due date for the Parent assignment has passed.
  • The time limit for a timed Parent assignment has been met.
• An Adaptive Follow-Up is due a number of days (specified by you) after the Parent assignment is due. This is translated into an actual date displayed in List View and on which the Follow-Up assignment is displayed in Calendar View.
• An Adaptive Follow-Up is always available until the course end date, unless you change the course end date.
  To synchronize the Follow-Up availability with the course end again

  You can open and re-save the Follow-Up assignment without needing to make other changes. Select the menu, choose Edit Adaptive Follow-Up, and then select Save.

Dynamic Study Modules, if provided for your textbook, are always available to students. As soon as you set a due date for an assigned module, the assignment becomes visible on students' Course Home calendar and Assignments tab. Scores are recorded only until the Due Date/Time passes, but the module remains available until the course end date.
