PXE

PXE (Pearson XHTML5 EPUB3, pronounced "pixie") is Pearson’s implementation of HTML5 markup language and the EPUB3 eBook packaging specification. PXE extends these industry standards to better address Pearson's educational content and new digital product and business models. Content authors use PXE to create, assemble, and deliver Pearson content from a single source file format to multiple current and emerging products, quickly and cost effectively.

PXE Master is the source format for Pearson print and digital media assets. PXE Master can generate all output types, including for tablets and smartphones. Each type of asset has a specific output profile, based on:

Target audience (student, instructor)

Product type (printed textbook, eTextbook, course module, international edition)

Primary platform (web, LMS tablet, phone)

Standards (Common Core, NCLEX)

Together, these criteria determine which components of the PXE Master file are exported via scripts to produce a specific output format.

Common EPUB3 outputs from PXE

PXE Basic: The simplest form of PXE using text and images.

PXE Basic is used for EPUB3 reflowable and responsive ebooks. PXE Basic doesn't accommodate media enhancements like videos or interactives.

PXE Premium: The richest, most powerful version of PXE output.

PXE Premium includes everything from PXE Basic, including EPUB3 reflowable and responsive ebooks.
