Discuss responses with a group

Peer discussion can be one of the most valuable parts of a Learning Catalytics session. You benefit from hearing other students describe their responses, and even more important, you clarify your own thinking and solidify your own understanding by expressing it to others. In that manner, a discussion can even help you get a deeper, more confident understanding of a response you got correct.

Group assignments

Depending on the kind of session, and on the number and arrangement of students participating, groups can be assigned in different ways:

  • Temporarily to discuss one question in an Instructor-Led or Automated Synchronous session. You'll receive a message on your device telling you whom to discuss the question with, and where to find them (usually nearby or in a chat session).
  • For a specific class period, to discuss all questions in a Team-Based session. Your instructor will tell you who the team members are and give you a Team name to enter when you join the session.
  • For an entire course term, to discuss all questions in all Team-Based sessions. Your instructor will tell you your permanent team assignment, and you will always work with the same team members, without being prompted for your Team name at the beginning of the session.
