Types of Learning Catalytics sessions
A Learning Catalytics session always includes questions that you see and respond to on your smartphone, tablet, or laptop. The questions can be delivered at different times in different ways.
What
Because the questions are delivered to your smartphone, tablet, or laptop, you can respond by entering text, uploading an image, sketching, highlighting text, or marking areas of an image. All of these questions can be delivered when and how your instructor decides.
When
Questions might be delivered to your device during class, either one question at a time for all students simultaneously, or as an in-class exercise that you complete independently or with a team.
You might be asked to sign in to Learning Catalytics to answer questions independently as a homework assignment. Sometimes you might be asked to sign in at a specific time to respond to questions that are delivered automatically to all students simultaneously.
How
Your instructor delivers questions one at a time during class. You respond to each question as it's delivered, within the time allotted by the instructor. You can change your answer until time is done for that question. Your instructor has the option to display all responses, and can choose to let you know which answer is correct. You might be asked to discuss your answer with a small group of classmates and then respond to the same question again.
You sign in at a specific time and answer each question as it's delivered automatically. When you join, a countdown lets you know when the session will begin and how many other students have joined the session with you. A timer also lets you know how much time is still available for each question, and you can change your answer until time is up. After students respond, groups might be formed automatically for you to chat with other participants about your responses, and then you answer the same question in a second round. At the end of each question, you see the correct answer and explanation, if they are stored with the question.
You receive a set of questions to answer independently, in any order. Use the selector to open a question: . Sometimes this kind of session is delivered in class, and is often used as a homework assignment. The session might have an automatic deadline, or your instructor might manually end the session.
This is like a Self-Paced session, except you see correct answers and an explanation after you submit each response. You might be allowed to repeat the session for further study or to change your answers.
Your instructor starts the session. You might be asked to enter a team name, or you may already be assigned to a permanent team that works together throughout the term. During the Individual Round in the first part of the session, you answer the questions in any order at your own pace. Your instructor decides when to move the entire class into the Team Round. Your team discusses the individual responses and arrives at a single team answer to each of the same questions.
