Linking to eText or eText 2.0 books

Use the eTextLink tag to create links in items that direct students link to a specific eText or eText 2.0 page or page range.

Links can be added to the eText or eText 2.0 books associated with the course, such as a main textbook and a lab guide. You can add eText links to the following sections:

Do NOT add eText links to titles, descriptions, taglines, Part instructions, answer choices, or images.

Student view

Here’s an example of what students see when an item includes an eText link.

When students click the icon or link text, a new window opens showing the eText page you specified.

Instructors can hide eText links, for example, during quizzes and tests.

Adding eText links

Including eText links is a two-part process: first you add links in the Item Editor, and then define the links on the Manage eText Links page. You must specify a start page; optionally, you can specify a range by including an end page.

  1. In the Item Editor, right-click where you want to add a link, and select Insert > eTextLink.

Alternatively, click the icon beside eTextLink in the entity list.

  1. [Optional] To specify link alignment, place the link in a <p> (paragraph) tag and enter left, center, or right.
  2. Enter a Link Code.

Enter 01 for the first link in an item, 02 for the second link, and so on.

  1. [Optional] Enter a brief description for this link, so you can distinguish it from other links you may add to this item.
  2. [Optional] If you don’t want students to see the eText icon (shown in the section "Student view" above), enter 1 for the iconOff attribute.
  3. Perform the previous steps for all eText links in the item, and save the item.
  4. In the main Authoring Tool window, select Edit Action > Manage eText Links.

Context, Description, and Link Code values are automatically provided, based on what you entered in the Item Editor. Book Code shows one or more books associated with this item.

  1. For courses that have more than one book, make sure the correct book for the Link Code displays beneath Book Code. If not, click the drop-down arrow and select the correct book.

If you added a link that pertains to two books, click Add Book and select the Book Code for the secondary book.

  1. Enter the Start Page, and optionally, the End Page for each link.

Numbers, letters, and hyphens are acceptable characters.

If you enter an End Page, students see a page range.

Important for eText 2.0 titles: If a section starts in the middle of the page (that is, with part of the previous section shown above it), the eText 2.0 page destination for the section goes to the previous section. To avoid this, make your link to the next page number in the section that you want, since most sections include multiples pages.

  1. Click Update to save the link description.

The Status column should change to Linked. If Broken or Missing displays instead, make sure the link is defined in the Item Editor, and that the Link Code there matches the one shown in this table.

  1. After specifying pages for each link, click Close.

Deleting eText links

To delete a link, remove the tag in the Item Editor and then remove the row for the link from the eText Links page.

  1. In the Item Editor, right-click the link and select Remove > eTextLink.
  2. From the main authoring page, select Edit Action > Manage eText Links.
  3. Click Delete for the Link Code associated with the link you deleted.
