About caption files and audio description files
The Flash media player allows the display of closed captions for the hearing impaired. Captioning breaks the voiceover into sentence fragments and chooses the start and end time for each fragment to appear at the bottom of the movie.
Caption and audio description files must be Timed Text files saved in .xml format (previously, caption files were in .srt format). When you provide the vendor with your final file for captioning, specify that the caption file must be saved in .xml format.
By default, captions are not shown. To display captions, students click the T button.
To add captions to a movie, upload the .xml file. Then:
- For a single movie, add the caption file name to the flashVars text string.
- For multiple movies, add the caption file name to the playlist file.
Although they are not required, Pearson strongly recommends that you provide captions and descriptions for your video and audio files to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
