Complex number mathematics

In any of the above answer types:

• Set the useImaginaryJ item-level flag to 1.
• Set the useComplexComputation item-level flag to 1.
• Use the form a+jb, remembering to explicitly insert an asterisk (*) for any implied multiplication. For example: (2+j*6)*(1+j*7)

  Note that students do not need to explicitly enter an asterisk (*) for any implied multiplication in their answers.

In any of the above answer types:

• Set the useComplexComputation item-level flag to 1.
• Enter cis to code for complex number in polar or phasor form.

  For example, to code a magnitude of 20 and a phase angle of 30, enter 20*cis(30).

• A phase angle can be represented in either degrees or radians.

  For degrees, set the useDegrees item-level flag to 1. (All Parts in your item should use the same convention.)

  Tip: If you set the degrees flag, be sure to add instructions for students to answer this question in degrees, not radians. (The default expectation in Mastering is radians.)

• If you want students to answer questions in phasor form only, set the requirePhasorNotation part-level flag to 1.
  
  

• Set the useComplexComputation item-level flag to 1.
• Enter conj to indicate a conjugate.

  This function can be paired with a complex number or a letter. To code a conjugate of Z, enter conj(Z). 

• You must explicitly insert an asterisk (*) for any implied multiplication.

  For example, to code a conjugate of 2+3j, enter conj(2+3*j).

• To represent complex numbers in your conjugate function using j instead of i, set useImaginaryJ to 1.
