Characteristics of a copied course

The following settings from the original course are copied as default values, but you can change these settings for the new course during the course-creation process: Textbook (see Important notes below), Time Zone, Course End Date (if that date is in the future), whether students can enroll (course is open or closed), and whether students are prompted to enter an ID when they enroll.

In addition, learning outcomes from the original course are copied into the new course. (You can also copy only the learning outcomes from one of your own courses.)

Tip: If you copy a pre-built course, it may have been created in a different time zone. Be sure to change the time zone, if needed.

Important notes about textbook selection:

• Copied assignment items are from the textbook edition of the original course, even if you select a different textbook or edition during the copy process. Assignment items are not automatically replaced by items in the selected textbook, but any items you add to new or copied assignments are from the selected textbook.

  If you are using Adaptive Follow-Up assignments, it's important to include new-edition items.

• The textbook you select when you copy a course determines the resources that are available in the new course, such as eText and publisher-provided items in the Item Library. If you need to change the book after creating the copied course, please contact 24/7 Technical Support.

All Standard Mastering assignments are copied to the new course.

If you are using Adaptive Follow-Ups, be sure to delete any copied assignments that you don't intend to use in the new course so the items in those assignments won’t be sequestered.

All assignment dates
Due dates and Available From dates are automatically copied if you select the Copy the assignment dates? option when you copy the course. The Available Until dates default to the Course End Date of the new course. You can adjust these dates, if needed.

All assignment settings
Includes the title, category, and staff notes. All grading, presentation, and security settings are also copied.

All content organization customizations for items in assignments
Includes any messages added to the assignment, point values, extra credit, whether items are pooled, whether items must be worked in serial order or in a randomized sequence, and whether variables will be randomized.

All learning outcomes associated with items
All learning outcomes are associated with the same items as in the original course. In the Learning Outcomes Summary, the number of items that are associated with each outcome is preserved, but the percentage complete is reset to 0, and average scores are blank.

All updates to assigned items that have been republished
If any assigned items in the original course have since been republished by the publisher, these items are automatically updated to the most recent version (in the original textbook edition) in the new course.

All Adaptive Follow-Up assignments that were part of the original course are available using the same (editable) settings, and based on the dates given for the Parent assignments.

Note: As mentioned above, you should delete any Standard assignments that you don't intend to use in the new course so the items in those assignments won't be sequestered, and thereby prevented from being included in Follow-Ups.

Documents or media files that were uploaded into the Course Materials area are copied when you copy the course. This includes lecture videos and screencasts that were recorded and automatically uploaded for the original course.

Note: For Modified Mastering you also have the option of using additional features for uploading or linking to documents and media.

Categories
All categories in the original course are copied.

Weighting values
All weighting values that have been specified for categories in the original course are copied into the new course.

Display Preferences
Gradebook display preferences are not copied. Your preferences are stored with your Pearson account, so they always apply to any course Gradebook you view.

Unless you change it when you supply Basic Information for the new course, the Course Title becomes "Copy of course_title." You should change this before students enroll.

On the Basic Information page, the Course End Date is initially blank when the end date has passed for the course you are copying (an expired course). You must supply a new end date, which can be no later than 2 years from the creation date of the new course..

Section instructor names and privileges are not copied.

Data about students who enrolled in the original course (names, grades, and so on) are not copied.

Groups are not copied.
