Instructor colleagues who will teach other sections or assist with your course, or students who will serve as course assistants/TAs, must be given the section instructor role so they can work in the course.
Note: If you are teaching a course that you linked to a learning management system such as Canvas, see Add a Mastering section instructor for a course linked to an LMS.
Section instructors can access a number of activities even before you grant them specific privileges to perform other tasks. No section instructor can delete your course. A course can only be deleted by the course creator.
An instructor colleague or a student who will become a section instructor creates a new Pearson account, registers and joins your course as a student, and then signs in to the course at least once.
You and the prospective section instructor complete this process.
You obtain complimentary student access codes from your Pearson sales rep and give them to your colleagues and TAs—one access code per person per course.
Important: Temporary access enrollment does not qualify for the section instructor role. The section instructor candidate must use a valid student access code.
You set up the course and give the course ID to each prospective section instructor. Find the course ID
The colleague or TA registers as a student using the complimentary student access code you provided.
Important: The colleague or TA should create a new account and register with a separate access code for each course in which he or she will be a section instructor. Once an account has been promoted from student to section instructor, it can't be used to enroll in another course in this term or later.
Tip: An option for those who want to sign in using the same account for all courses in which they are a section instructor in the same term is to use one account to register in all courses before being promoted in any course.
Workaround: If this special account is promoted before all of the section instructor's registrations are completed, you (and any other instructors who have promoted the account) can change the role back to student to allow the section instructor to register in one or more additional courses, and then promote the account again.
In the Role column, click Student.
If the pop-up that shows options doesn't open, the "student" may have registered with temporary access. Be sure to supply a complimentary student access code so the colleague or assistant can register with full access so you can complete this step.
For Roster Access, select On if you want to grant a section instructor access to the Roles and Enrollment Status roster.
By default, Roster Access is set to Off.
Click to go back to the roster list.
The student’s row is highlighted to indicate a change.
The student’s role is now section instructor in the roster, with Roles and Enrollment Status roster access, if applicable.
To change the role back to student:
Follow the same steps, but reverse the roles.
