Enter and edit student IDs
Updated 29 Aug 2024
In addition to tracking students by name, Mastering can also maintain "student ID" information. The student IDs can match school IDs or can follow some other format or convention you choose.
- Up to 32 characters.
- Characters A-Z, a-z, 0-9, and any standard keyboard characters, such as period (.), @, _, or -.
- A single space between characters, but not a series of spaces.
You can either:
- Choose to have students enter their unique student IDs when they sign in. Make this selection in Course Settings. There you can customize the prompt that asks students to enter their student ID and lets them know what kind of format to use (for example, university ID).
Students who enter a student ID need to do it only once. After a student enters the ID, he or she is not prompted to enter it again.
- Add or edit student ID information yourself by following the steps in the last section, below (or, for courses with large enrollment, by editing an exported spreadsheet).
For a student who entered a student ID for another Mastering course, the earlier student ID automatically appears on the student’s User Settings page if you require students to enter their IDs.
Previously entered student IDs also appear in the instructor’s Roster page for the new course. If the older IDs don’t pertain to your course, you can edit student IDs, as described below.
- From your LMS course, select Mastering Student IDs & Groups.
- Enter or edit the student ID information for the appropriate students.
- Select Save.
When you export Mastering Gradebook scores from a course as a spreadsheet (.csv file), you can use the student ID column to help combine Mastering grades with grades from other sources.
