Grade Student Writing Submissions

You use the Submissions page to view and grade students' Write activities and Writing Practice exercises. You can enter review comments, assign a score, and, optionally, allow a student to submit another draft.

If you are grading a Writing Practice exercise, your score overwrites the score from the automated feedback.

To view and grade a writing submission:

  1. Click the Submissions tab.

See Submissions Page for information on using the drop-down lists to filter the displayed information.

  2. Click a student's name to open the submission.

The MyLab displays the question or statement for which the student wrote a response and the student's written submission in the text box.

  3. Use the buttons above the student's submission as follows:

View Suggested Answer: Click this button to display a sample of a completed response for the question or statement the student selected. This button is displayed only for Writing Skill submissions (not for Writing Practice exercises).

View Draft History: Click this button to view both the student's earlier drafts and your comments on those drafts for this exercise. For a Writing Practice exercise, the draft history also displays any automated feedback.

Print: Click this button to print the page.

  4. Enter comments to the student in the student's text.

The MyLab displays your comments to the student in the draft history, not in the student's actual draft.

  5. Enter a grade in the Score text box for this draft. (The score for a Writing Practice exercise must be a whole number in the range of 1 through 6.)
  6. Select the Final Grade check box only if this is the student's final draft. (After you select this check box, the student cannot submit further drafts for this Write activity or exercise.)
  7. Click one of the following buttons:

Save to save your comments as you work.

Save and Return Later to save and exit the submission before completing your comments and scoring.

Save and Submit to return the submission to the student with your comments and grade.
