Run an Assignment Details report

This report shows student performance on a particular assignment, by question.

Note: Teaching assistants need permission to run reports. Use the Preferences > Permissions page to control what teaching assistants can do in your course.

Generate reports

To generate reports:

  1. Click Gradebook > Grades.
  2. From the activity column options menu, select View Details. For a leveled content container, the View Details option displays each level in the container; you have to select the appropriate level.

Note: View Details is only available for LTI (math) activities and activities that use the Basic/Random, Writing Assistant, or Assignment behavioral modes. It is not available for activities set to practice mode or anonymous submission, or for which random question selection is enabled. (Note that if you edit an activity and turn question randomization off, you are able to run the report for the activity. However, the report data is inconsistent—it reflects the state of the activity at the time of each submission. Therefore, submissions made prior to your edit can have different values than submissions made after your edit. ).

The Assignment Details report appears with the following details:

Activity NameClick to preview the activity. If any question text is dynamic, the question text/answers may change each time you preview the activity.
    # QuestionsTotal number of questions in the activity. If required, scroll horizontally to view all questions.
Points PossibleTotal possible points for the activity.
Mastery ThresholdMastery threshold defined for the activity.
Student NameColumn that shows the name of the student (Last name, first name). Only students who submitted the activity are listed in the report.
    Overall

Column that shows the overall percentage ([ (sum of all scores for the student/total possible points for activity)*100]) or raw score ([The total marks scored/The total marks available]) for each student (Raw score values are only available for Writing Assistant activities).

    • If the score is below the Mastery Threshold the cell is highlighted in yellow.
    • If the student has a question that is still "Pending" grading, their overall % score is also "Pending."
    • If the student skipped a question the question is counted as incorrect.
    Questions

Each question in the activity is listed in a separate column.

Tip: Place your cursor over the question number to view the question type and point value.

    Correct Answers / Possible Points

Row that shows the correct answer for multiple choice questions, or the total number of possible points for other question types. For LTI activities, the question type is the same for all questions.

    # IncorrectRow that shows the number of students who answered the question incorrectly.
    # CorrectRow that shows the number of students who answered the question correctly.
% ScoreThe calculation is [(Sum of all scores for all students/sum of total possible points for the question)*100]
  3. Click the Legend to understand the icons in each cell.
PendingInstructor has not yet graded the question. Questions that show "pending" are ignored in all report calculations.
    Correct response (full credit)
    A, B, C, D,
    and so on
Incorrect responses are shown for multiple choice questions
    Partial credit
    Incorrect submission (or 0 points)
Skipped question (student did not submit the question). Skipped questions are included in report calculations as "incorrect."

What data is included in the report?

The following table shows which data is included in the report in the scenarios listed:

Scenario Impact on Report Data
Activity allows for multiple submissions The report shows data for the submission recorded in the gradebook, even if there are multiple submissions. If the gradebook shows the average of all submissions, the report uses the submission with the highest overall score.
You edit the activity after there are submissions

Report results may be inconsistent for submissions made prior to and after the edit. The following shows a list of common scenarios and their impact.

Scenario Impact
Change activity name None. The report shows the current activity name.
Add questions

Questions shown in the report are renumbered to reflect the current order. Any prior submissions show "---" for the questions that were added after the student submitted their work.

The Overall score for students that submitted the activity prior to adding the new question will change since the new question is considered in the calculation of total possible points for the activity.

After a student submits the new question, the % Score for the question will only consider the values for the students that submitted the question.

Remove or reorder questions Questions shown in the report are renumbered to reflect the current order.
Add answers If you add answers to multiple choice questions (in which shuffling is not enabled) the existing submissions are updated to reflect the current answer choices. For example, assume the original question had three answer choices (A, B, and C) and B was correct. If you add a new answer choice in the first position so there are four choices (A, B, C, and D), the correct answer is now C. If a student originally answered A (incorrect), when you ran the report after the edit that same student data would still show they answered A though the current position of their answer is B.
Remove answers If you remove answers from multiple choice questions (in which shuffling is not enabled) the existing submissions are not updated to reflect the current answer choices. For example, assume the original question had four answer choices (A, B, C and D) and B was correct. If you remove the answer choice in the first position so there are three choices (A, B, and C), the correct answer is now A. If a student originally answered A (incorrect), when you ran the report after the edit that same student data would show dashes (---) as their answer choice no longer exists. If the student originally answered B (correct), when you ran the report after the edit that same student data would show they answered A (but the answer would be reported as incorrect in the report). If you deleted the choice in the fourth position (D), and the student answered A originally, the report would still show the student's original answer A (incorrect).
Reorder answers If you reorder answers for multiple choice questions (in which shuffling is not enabled) the existing submissions are not updated to reflect the current answer choices. For example, assume the original question had three answer choices (A, B, and C) and the second position (B) was correct. You then reorder the answer choices to make the answer in the third position correct (C, A, B). If a student originally answered A (incorrect), when you ran the report after the edit that same student data would still show they answered A (and the answer would be reported as incorrect in the report).
Change correct answer If you change the answer for multiple choice questions (in which shuffling is not enabled) the existing submissions are not updated to reflect the current answer choices. For example, assume the original question had three answer choices (A, B, and C) and the third position (C) was correct. You then change the correct answer to be the answer in the first position correct (A). If a student originally answered A (incorrect), when you ran the report after the edit that same student data would still show they answered A (and the answer would be reported as incorrect in the report). If you run the report prior to a new student submission the Correct answer row will show the original correct answer; it will only be updated after a student submission.
Shuffling

When question (or answer) shuffling is enabled the questions and answers in the report reflect the question order shown on the activity Questions tab when you create or edit the activity.

If you disable shuffling after there are submissions the report continues to reflect the question order shown on the activity Questions tab when you create or edit the activity. To view the order in which a particular student answered the questions you can view the submission for that student.
