Note: The term “study plan” refers to readiness checks and practice tests with study plans in all MyLanguageLabs.
Use the Preferences > Study Plan page to define the functionality, presentation, and options available for course readiness checks.
You can:
To view or modify readiness check preferences for your course:
Click Preferences in the top-right corner of the page.
Click Study Plan in the Instructor column.

Customize readiness checks
Readiness checks typically contain two activities: a pre-test and a post-test. You can rename these activities, change their descriptions, and edit their preferences.
Enable: Select to enable the activity in the readiness check and display it to students. Clearing the pre-test box presents all study materials to students regardless of the passing threshold for the activity or whether or not you assigned the activity. You still have to create a pre-test when you create new readiness checks, but the pre-test will not be visible to students. By default, the post-test option is checked and cannot be cleared.
Note: If the pre-test is enabled and at least one student submits the pre-test, Enable is dimmed and you cannot disable the readiness check pre-test.
Name: Use this field to rename readiness check tests. Each name can include up to
50 alphanumeric characters. The name specified in the box is reflected in all places where the default names "pre-test" or "post-test" appear. For example, the names you enter here appear when you create a readiness check and appear in the student view when students open the readiness check.
Description: Use this field to enter a description of up to 500 alphanumeric characters for the readiness check tests. Instructors can view the description on this page; students do not see this description.
Preferences: Click Edit to set default preferences for the readiness check pre-test or post-test. After you make changes to any category, click Save to apply the changes. If you click Apply to all, your changes apply to all current and new pre-tests and post-tests. For details on available options, see Set preferences for an activity.
Readiness check status
The following settings control the status icons, calculations, and display of results for readiness check pre-tests and post-tests.
Options are:
Update based on a Learning Objective/Skill threshold score appears after a student submits the pre-test, and the resulting status is either Mastered or Completed. The status of any study material and of the post-test is either Completed or Attempt Again.
Mastered appears if the student meets the passing threshold of each individual learning objective or skill covered in the pre-test. For example, if there are three skills, each with a threshold score of 80%, the student must get 80% or better on each skill to receive the Mastered status icon.
Completed appears if the student fails to meet the passing threshold for one or more individual learning objectives (or skills) covered on the pre-test. For example, if a pre-test covers three skills, each with a threshold score of 80%, and the student gets 78% on one skill and 100% on the remaining two skills, the student sees the Completed status icon.
Completed also appears if you manually mark the test complete or if the student meets the passing threshold of each individual learning objective (or skill) covered in the post-test.
Attempt Again appears if the student fails to meet the passing threshold for one or more individual learning objectives (or skills) covered on the post-test. For example, if there are three skills, each with a threshold score of 80%, if the student gets 78% on one skill and 100% on the remaining two skills, the student will see the Attempt Again status icon.
Notifications Channel alerts
Check one of the following options to enable the Review Required alert in the Notifications channel.
Flag instructor after student submits pre-test: This option appears if readiness check pre-tests are enabled. When selected, after the student completes the readiness check pre-test you receive an alert in the Notifications channel. You must clear the alert to allow the student to progress with the readiness check. After students complete the pre-test, they see a message indicating that instructor review is required, and students cannot view or open additional study materials until you clear the alert in the Notifications channel.
Flag instructor when remediation material attempts are exceeded: When selected, if the student does not meet the passing threshold score for readiness check material (activities only) and exceeds the attempts provided, Review Required appears on the Course Materials page for instructors and students.
Flag instructor after __ attempts on the post-test: When selected, if the student does not pass the thresholds for the post-test in the number of attempts you indicate, you receive an alert in the Notifications channel, and you must clear the alert before the student can continue work on that activity. Students see a message in their To Do list that indicates that instructor review is required, and students cannot view or open additional study materials until you clear the Notifications channel alert.
Allow instructor to reassign remediation based on post-test results: When selected, you can reassign the post-test with system-prescribed study materials. This option enables the Reassign Study Materials on the post-test options menu in Assignment Calendar. Students must complete the readiness check materials before they re-take the post-test.
Student display
Options are:
Display Learning Objectives/Skills to students when taking remediation activity: When selected, students can view study materials by the learning objectives or skills with which the activity is associated. When cleared, the study material appears in the order in which it appeared when the readiness check was created.
Display learning objectives/skills on the results page after student submits the pre-test or post-test: When selected, after they complete the activity, students can view their score and the learning objectives or skills with which the activity is associated. When cleared, students can view their score, but not the related learning objectives or skills.
Allow students to review remediation materials they have submitted: When selected, students can view their submission for all study materials. When cleared, students are unable to view study material submissions.
Display unassigned remediation materials: When selected, students are able to view study materials that have not been assigned to them based on their score. For example, if students met the pass criteria for a particular learning objective or skill in the pre-test they will still be able to view the study materials associated with that learning objective or skill.
