Use custom categories
You can create custom categories and add assignments to manage how overall scores are calculated.
For example, you can create a category and:
- Add your final exam to weight it more than other tests.
- Add assignments to omit from overall score calculations.
- Add assignments to exclude when you drop lowest scores.
For example, you can drop lowest scores for tests, but create a separate category for your final exam so its score not dropped.
- Add assignments for students to do offline.
You manage how scores in your categories are weighted on the Change Weights and Categories page.
Your new categories display on the student Results page.
Create and apply a category
- From your Gradebook, select Change Weights in the toolbar.
- On the Change Weights and Categories page, choose whether to weight by category and assignment or by assignment only.
You cannot change this setting after you have created categories or used more than one offline category.
- In the Category Weighting table, select Add Category.
- Choose the type of assignment to add to the category, enter a name, and assign a weight.
- In the Assignment Weighting table, use the Category list to apply your new category to one or more assignments.
See Change assignment weighting for details on weighting scores in custom categories.
Remove categories
- In the Assignment Weighting table, use the Category list to reassign the category for all assignments in the category you want to delete.
- In the Category Weighting table, select the trashcan icon for the category.
- Select Save. The page refreshes and no longer displays the category.
