Early Alerts: Student List view

The Student List shows your students grouped by risk level. About the data behind risk levels

Student names correspond to your Mastering course roster.

The list of students on the page reflects the selected risk-level groups at the top of the page.

  • Details about the current risk levels — Point to info next to Current Risk Levels to show when risk levels are updated. The ranges that separate high, medium, and low risk are also shown. See below for instructions to adjust these risk settings.

  • Order of students in the list (from high to low risk) — When all risk levels are selected, students in the “No/Low Info” group are listed first since they're either doing no work or too little to be assigned a risk level. The next groups are high risk (red), medium risk (yellow), and low risk (green).

  • Reverse the risk category order in student list — Select the "Latest Risk" column heading in the student list.

Point to info to check when the information was last updated.

Risk

  • Weekly Risk History — Shows how a student’s risk score has changed over time. Check whether a medium or high risk-level status may be new (the student may be falling behind). If a student is stuck at a high risk level, the student may need an intervention.

    A Weekly Risk History entry appears for the past 15 weeks or less, if the course is not that old. For active courses, weekly updates occur at midnight on Monday, GMT-7.

  • Latest Risk — This is the most current risk assessment for each student.

Question Accuracy

Correctness metrics are from the last 20 item parts students completed across assignments.

  • Test/Quiz — Percent average score for Test and/or Quiz item parts

  • Homework — Percent average score for all for-credit Homework category assignment item parts

  • Correct First Try — Percentage of answer submissions that were correct on the first attempt

The student list shows information for the selected risk level group or groups. Select a column heading to sort the student list and metrics.

  • Student — Alphabetical or reverse alphabetical order
  • Latest Risk — Ascending or descending
  • Question Accuracy — Ascending or descending
    You can sort by the column headings Test/Quiz, Homework, and Correct First Try.

Point to info to check when the information was last updated.

You may want to adjust risk setting thresholds for individual courses, depending on the difficulty of the course. Any Mastering course you copy does NOT inherit any Early Alerts customized risk settings.

  1. Select the Mastering course for which you want to adjust risk settings.
  2. Select Risk settings.
    Values closest to 1 are for High Risk and closest to 0 are for Low Risk.
  3. Use the slider to adjust the risk levels.
    The default for Medium Risk begins at 0.7, High Risk begins at 0.9. So, any student with a risk score greater than 0.70 is considered at risk.

  4. Select Update.
    After you reset the risk settings, the word Custom appears next to .

To return to the default risk setting levels — Select Risk settings, then Reset to default to return the risk levels to 0.7 for Medium and 0.9 for High.

Students see only their own name as a recipient.

Each student’s first name is added after “Hi” and your first and last name is added at the end. Any student replies go to the email address for your Pearson educator account for the course.

  1. Filter for students in a particular risk level group, like High Risk, by selecting or clearing risk-level check boxes at the top of the page.

  2. To select ALL students within the risk-level —
    Add a check mark to the box for the Student column. To cancel, clear the Student check box.

    To choose only SPECIFIC students from the list —
    Select individual student check boxes.

  3. Select Email Students (x) in the Interventions area to open the message form.
    (The number of email recipients appears in the parentheses.)
  4. Enter your message.

  5. Accept or clear the selection to also send yourself a copy.

  6. Select Send.

You can also do any of the following from the Student List view in Early Alerts.

Select  Search students (top right), then enter a student name. The Search box works for student names only.

  • If a single match is found —
    The student’s current risk indicators and risk history are shown on the individual student page.
  • For a match of more than one student —
    The Student List shows info for the matching students. Select a student name for individual risk data.

Student names in Early Alerts match those in your Mastering course roster. Any students disenrolled or marked as inactive in the course roster are dropped from Early Alerts the next day.

The downloaded file captures the data in your current view.

  1. Show the information you want on the Student List.
    Select or clear the risk-level check boxes at the top of the page and sort any columns in the student list.

  2. Select "" Download (top right) from the student list.

    • The downloaded file is named early_alerts_year_month_day_…

    • Consider renaming the file to also identify the course.

Select  Options menu (on the right), then Share Feedback. Choose whether the section was helpful, enter any comments, and select Send.

What happens with your feedback? Your comments can help to guide future refinements to Early Alerts and its risk algorithm. Work is ongoing to improve the Early Alerts experience and its usefulness for you and your students.
