Types of Learning Catalytics sessions
Updated 05 Mar 2024
A Learning Catalytics session always includes questions that you see and respond to on your smartphone, tablet, or laptop. The questions can be delivered during a class period (physically or online) or outside of class, as a homework or quiz.
The 5 session types
Your instructor delivers questions one at a time during class. You respond to each question as it's delivered, within the time allotted for that question. You can change your answer until time is done for that question. Your instructor has the option to display all responses, and can choose to let you know which answer is correct.
You may be asked to discuss your answer with a small group of classmates and then respond to the same question again.
You sign in at a specific time and answer each question as it's delivered automatically.
When you join, a countdown lets you know when the session will begin and how many other students have joined the session with you.
A timer also lets you know how much time you have for the current question. You can change your answer until time is up.
After everyone has responded, you may be asked to join a group to chat with other students about your responses. You then answer the same question again in a second round.
At the end of each question, you see the correct answer and explanation, if they're stored with the question.
You answer a set of questions independently, in any order. Use the selector to open a question: .
This kind of session is delivered in class or used as a homework assignment.
The session might have an automatic deadline, or your instructor may manually end the session.
Like a Self-Paced session, except you see correct answers and an explanation after you submit each response.
You may be allowed to repeat the session for further study or to change your answers.
Your instructor starts the session. You may be asked to enter a team name, or you may already be assigned to a permanent team that works together throughout the term.
During the Individual Round in the first part of the session, you answer the questions in any order at your own pace.
Your instructor decides when to move the entire class into the Team Round.
In the Team Round, your team discusses the individual responses and submits a single team answer to each of the same questions.
