Prepare multiple-choice questions
Updated 30 Aug 2024
For multiple choice questions and answers to be imported correctly, follow the Import guidelines and these formatting rules. You can also import True/False questions this same way.
- Your file can contain a mix of multiple choice questions and essay questions. See How to prepare essay questions for import and the section "Multiple choice and essay answer list example" below.
- If the plain text in your import file removes formulas or other formats you want to keep, use the Simple Editor to edit the imported items later.

- Precede each question with a number, followed by a period or a left parenthesis. Do not include introductory text before the number.
- If the question includes Roman numerals, use a hyphen after the Roman numeral (see the Roman numeral example below).
- Precede each answer with an upper or lowercase letter, followed by a period or a left parenthesis.
- Precede each correct answer with an asterisk.
For example:
1. This is a question.
a. This is the first incorrect answer.
b. This is the second incorrect answer.
*c. This is a correct answer.
*d. This is also a correct answer.
Alternatively, you can provide an answer list at the end of the file, that starts and ends with "!Answers" (see the last section below).
- Add a title for each question. (Optional)
Use the format
Title: question title
Include a colon after the word Title. The title you enter becomes the name of the question in the Item Library. If you don't enter a title, the Import Tool uses your file name, minus the .rtf extension, as the name. If there are multiple questions in one file, they are named file-001, file-002, and so on. Giving each question a title makes it much easier to locate and differentiate them in the library.
To discourage cheating, you can hide all item titles from students in an assignment.
- Enter a number before each question, using one of the following formats:
1. question
1) question
The number must be plain text (no bold or other formatting). Don't include any introductory text before the number.
- Enter a letter before each answer, using one of the following formats:
a. answer
A. answer
a) answer
A) answer
- Enter an asterisk (*) before the letter of each correct answer, in the format:
*a. correct answer
Do not include a space between the asterisk and the letter.
Alternatively, you can enter an answer list at the end of the file, in the format:
!Answers
1. a
2. c,d,e
3. b,d
!Answers
where each number matches the associated question earlier in the file. For questions with multiple correct answers, enter a comma between answer letters, but don't include a space between the comma and the next letter.
- Enter follow-up text. (Optional)
Enter the pound sign (#) and follow-up text after the last answer for each question, in the format:#follow-up text
