Troubleshoot content import issues
Updated 30 Aug 2024
If you encounter an error while importing custom content, follow the suggestions below the error message. If this doesn't fix the problem, review the information in this section to ensure that the file and format are correct.
Make sure you:
- Save the file in RTF format. Just changing the file extension to .rtf doesn't work; you must also change the file format to RTF using something similar to File > Save As and choosing Rich Text Format (*.rtf)
- Import only one RTF file at a time.
- See the sections below: Items were not imported and No correct answers, or other answer issues.
ZIP is the only compressed file format supported. Do not try to import compressed files in other formats such as .sit, .tar, or .bin.
Make sure you:
- Start with an RTF file (extension .rtf) that you saved in RTF format.
- Use a program for creating ZIP files to save the RTF file in ZIP format (extension .zip). Just changing the file extension to .zip doesn' t work.
- Import only one ZIP file at a time.
- Include only one RTF file in each ZIP file. If these import correctly, you can try adding multiple RTFs to one ZIP.
Check Items were not imported and No correct answers, or other answer issues.
If a ZIP file isn't imported properly — Try unzipping the file as you would normally, to ensure the ZIP file format is valid. If this doesn't work, the ZIP file could be corrupt. Delete it and try saving the RTF as a ZIP file again.
Check that the file size is less than 6 MB. If the file is larger, do one of the following.
- Break it into several files and import each one separately.
- Save the file in .zip format. If the .zip file is less than 6 MB, then you can import it.
Check all formatting.
- All questions must start with a number, followed by either a period or left parenthesis "1. question"or "1) question". Numbers must be plain text—not bold or italic. Do not include introductory text before a number.
- For Symbols, Greek characters, and other special characters that aren't on a standard keyboard, use a program that has an "insert symbol" function and add each symbol from the palette. Do not select the Symbol font and then enter characters from the keyboard, or apply the Symbol font to characters already entered.
- If you include a title, use "Title:" followed by title text.
- If you include follow-up text, add it after the last answer for each multiple choice question or after the two blank lines following an essay question. Precede follow-up text with # (the pound sign).
- If you include subparts, do not use letters to distinguish them (letters indicate multiple choice selections); instead, use Part A or dashes (-).
- If you forgot to remove page numbers before importing, you can use the Simple Editor to remove them.
See Formatting guidelines and No correct answers, or other answer issues, below.
Check all answers.
- All multiple choice questions must have answers that begin with a letter followed by either a period or a left parenthesis "a. answer" or "a) answer".
- Each multiple choice question must have at least one correct answer, indicated either with an asterisk (*) before the letter, or an answer list at the end of the file that starts and ends with "!Answers". If the RTF file contains asterisks, try deleting them from the RTF and re-entering them. It's possible that the original file used a different character code to produce the asterisks.
- Make sure all essay questions are followed by two blank line spaces (press Enter twice).
- If you use an answer list, make sure there is only one answer list per file that includes answers for all questions (for essays, answers are two blank line spaces).
- If you use both * and an answer list to indicate correct multiple choice answers, a warning displays. If you proceed, the system uses the answers in the list to assign correct answers.
