Track offline activities (non-Mastering)

You can add grades to the Mastering Gradebook that are not from Mastering assignments in the course. For example, you could add grades from a chemistry lab, or class participation. First you create the offline activity in the Mastering Gradebook, then you use a spreadsheet to import the grades.

Instructors or a section instructor with the Gradebook privilege can create and grade these offline activities in the Mastering Gradebook.

  1. From the Course Home —
    Select Gradebook Settings (Getting Started area).

    From the course menu —
    Select Instructor Tools, Gradebook and then "" Gradebook Settings.

  2. Select the Offline Activities tab.
  3. Follow the instructions below to complete each task.
    • Create Offline Activity
      Create a record for a non-Mastering activity, such as a lab or class discussion, to include scores in the Mastering Gradebook. For these activities, you select a category, enter a description, assign points, set a due date, and specify when or whether the score is visible to students.

      Select "" Create Offline Activity, enter information, and then choose Save.

    • Edit Settings
      In the Actions column, select Edit Settings to change any settings you specified when you created the activity, and then choose Save.
    • Edit Scores/ Exempt Student
      In the Actions column, select Edit Scores to manually enter or edit scores or exempt a student from the assignment. When you are finished, choose Save.

      Scores for Offline Activities always count for regular credit. They're never calculated as extra credit. You can, however, apply weighting to the category that you associate an Offline Activity with.

      For Mastering courses that you linked to Blackboard, exemptions are not transferred from Mastering to the Blackboard Grade Center. Apply these exemptions in Blackboard.

    • Import Scores
      In the Actions column, select Import Scores to download a blank spreadsheet and enter scores, and then import scores for the offline activity you created.
  • Students see any offline activity scores you enter or import into the Mastering Gradebook, provided you make scores visible in the activity's settings. Students see these scores on their personal Scores page.
  • Offline activities do not appear in students' Assignments list or on the calendar. You can add Mastering announcements to describe any non-Mastering activities you assign (like lab work), and to post reminders of their due dates.
