Sync Mastering grades to your LMS gradebook
Updated 29 Aug 2024
Sync grades from your Mastering course to your learning management system (LMS) gradebook when you work in Blackboard, D2L Brightspace, Canvas, Moodle,
Your LMS administrator needs to enable the grade sync feature.
You must also set up grade sync for your Mastering course from the LMS. For instructions, see Sync Grades in Instructor Help for MyLab and Mastering for your LMS.
For details about Mastering assignment setup for grade sync — See the sections below about due date, points, and other guidelines for Mastering assignments.
Regardless of whether you have set up grade sync, you can manually export scores, time, and difficulty data from the Mastering Gradebook to a .csv file. Then import the .csv file into your LMS or open it with a spreadsheet application.
- Scores can be synced using automatic grade sync or you can sync grades manually. Both processes require some initial setup.
- Only raw, unweighted Mastering scores are synced. Any weighting scheme you set in the Mastering gradebook doesn’t carry over into the LMS gradebook
- Syncing Mastering grades to your LMS gradebook is not instantaneous. It can take 15+ minutes for students to see their scores in the LMS.
- Mastering scores usually appear in your LMS gradebook as total points earned out of total points possible. For example, you might see 4/5 or 4.00/5.00, depending on your LMS.
This includes Mastering standard assignments, any specialized assignments (Adaptive Follow-Ups, Dynamic Study Modules, Learning Catalytics, and Offline Activities), and any graded Freehand Grader assignments can be synced. For Learning Catalytics, grades sync from Mastering after a synchronous session ends.
Due date and points for syncing Mastering assignment scores
You must set assignment due date and availability dates for Mastering assignment scores to sync from Mastering to the LMS. (Unassigned assignments do not sync.)
If your Canvas course is paired with a Mastering course through the Access Pearson (LTI 1.3) integration, you need to turn off assignment late penalties in either Mastering or Canvas. Otherwise, students may be penalized twice.
Also, assignment extensions given in Mastering, whether by student or by assignment, are not passed to Canvas during grade sync. You must change the due date for the students in Canvas. (Otherwise, Canvas will ignore the extension.)
A late penalty is active by default in all Mastering assignment categories― Homework, Quiz, and Test.
- For instructions on how to change the late penalty setting for a category — See Edit grading and presentation settings for an assignment or category.
- Caveat when you change category settings — Changing settings as a new default for a category applies them to the current assignment and to any assignments in the category going forward.
- To update previously created assignments with the newer category settings — See apply updated category settings to assignments. (Requires that you open each previously created assignment.)
Mastering 0-point value assignments, such as Scheduled Reading or assignments with for-practice items only, won’t sync to D2L Brightspace or Schoology. See next section for more about 0-point value assignments.
Mastering standard assignments —
You set assignment credit item by item. The assignment can have a mix of items including for practice (0 points), credit (x points), and extra credit items (x points), but at least one item must be for credit.

Dynamic Study Modules, Adaptive Follow-Ups, and Learning Catalytics — Assign credit of at least 1 point for the entire Dynamic Study Module and Adaptive Follow-Up assignment and for each Learning Catalytics session that you want to sync.
Freehand Grader — Freehand Grader assignments will sync as long as each assignment has a for-credit value of at least 1 point.
Blackboard, Canvas, and Moodle — Dashes appear for each synced Mastering score in the Blackboard, Canvas, and Moodle gradebook.
D2L Brightspace and Schoology — These LMSs don’t support grade sync for Mastering 0-point value assignments or for assignments with only practice or extra credit items. For grade sync to work, assign a point value to at least one of the assignment items in standard assignments or to the entire assignment, like for a Dynamic Study Module. (You cannot assign a point value to Scheduled Readings.)
- Scheduled Reading assignments — Scheduled Reading assignments never have any point value and aren’t tracked in the Mastering Gradebook. However, the grade sync mechanism recognizes these assignments in the LMS gradebook.
- Assignments with “for practice” items only —
For practice items are automatically assigned a 0-point value. Also, if you assign a 0-point value to any item it becomes "for practice". How to assign point values
Other guidelines for syncing Mastering assignment scores
To ensure score accuracy in your LMS gradebook, apply any student assignment exemptions in your LMS.
Special characters might also include extended ASCII characters, such as en-dashes, em-dashes, or accents. Such characters will interfere with grade sync unless they are removed. Troubleshoot Mastering grade sync issues with D2L Brightspace
As a workaround, you can export scores, time, and difficulty data from the Mastering Gradebook to a .csv file and then import it into your LMS. More about the Beta assign-by-group feature
