Edit assignment messages and instructions

Use the editing toolbar options below to format your text or to add links into an assignment message or instructions you add above the assignment items list.

For example, you can add a link into specific pages of the eTextbook associated with your Mastering course. These page reference links do not get updated automatically in assignments if you later copy the course to a new edition textbook.

To undo a text format: Select Formats then Clear Formatting.

Select text characters and then choose the formatting you want, whether Bold, Italic, or Underline.

Bulleted list or numbered list 

  • To add a list —
    Select either Bullet list or Numbered list, and then enter the list text.
  • To change the format of an existing list —
    Select the list whose format you want to change and then choose the applicable list type. (You cannot use Clear Formatting to change a list to plain text.)

Insert/edit link

  • Choose Insert/edit link either when you want to add or edit a hyperlink.
  • Links to videos — You can add links to audio or video.

Add eText link

  1. Insert your cursor and then choose Add eText link. (The Pearson eText is also known as eTextbook.)
  2. Enter the Start and End Page, then choose OK.

Students who select the eTextbook link will either go to the exact starting page of the eTextbook or to the closest named section for the starting page. You may want to try out the link behavior.

Insert menu

  • Position your cursor and select either Insert Special Character or Insert Nonbreaking Space.
  • Insert Special Character — Select a character from the choices provided, such as a common fraction, arrow, or Greek letter (uppercase or lowercase).

Formats menu

Before choosing Format and one of the options below, you can either select the text you want to format or place your insertion point in the message box.

  • Superscript or Subscript — You can use these options with alphanumeric characters.
  • Font Family — Options are Times New Roman, Georgia, Arial, Verdana, or Courier. The default font is Verdana.
  • Text Size — Options are Tiny, Small, Normal, Big, and Huge. The default size is Normal.
  • Blocks — Options are Paragraph, Blockquote, and Pre. (These correspond to HTML block tags.) Select Pre to preserve spaces and line breaks as they appear in preformatted text. The default is Paragraph.
  • Clear Formatting — You must select text before you can clear its formatting, such as for underline or a text size. Clear Formatting does NOT apply to special characters, list styles, font, text size, or links.
