Essays in an assignment are ignored by Mastering's automatic grading system. The score for the assignment and for any item that contains an essay is calculated as if the essay did not exist.

The following illustration shows what you might see in the Gradebook column for an assignment that contains at least one essay.
In this example, the assignment is not yet due, so all the grade cells are gray. The for-credit item completion thermometers are turned on in Gradebook Preferences, so you can see how much of the assignment each student has completed so far.

Activity for students 1 through 5:
- Hasn't started the assignment (empty completion thermometer).
- Has completed the assignment, and Mastering has auto-scored the non-essay portion. The essay portion is
ready to be scored.
- Has completed only the non-essay portion, which Mastering has auto-scored.
- Has completed the essay portion, which is
ready to be scored.
- Has completed the assignment, Mastering has auto-scored the non-essay portion, and an instructor/section instructor has scored the essay portion. The pencil is gone because no essay remains to be scored.

On a student's Scores page or Assignment Grade page, you see all provisional scores signified by the
pencil icon.
