Learning Catalytics for in-class learning

Your instructor will let you know if your class will be using Learning Catalytics with your Mastering course.

• To find out if Learning Catalytics is available to you: Select either  Learning Catalytics or  Join Session (upper right) from the Mastering Course Home on a computer. If you have access, you can join a Learning Catalytics session.

The instructions below apply to joining a Learning Catalytics session on your laptop as well as on your smartphone or tablet.

1. From the Mastering Course Home, select  Join Session (on a computer) or tap Join Session in Progress (on a mobile device) from the Mastering Course Home.

   You're directed to the available session(s) in progress, when you have a subscription to Learning Catalytics. (Otherwise, you’re prompted to purchase access. See the previous section for more information.)

   If multiple Learning Catalytics sessions are available and you're not brought to the correct session, select Join another session. Select your session from the list of available sessions or enter the instructor-provided session ID, and then choose Join.

2. If asked, identify your seat in the classroom (either enter an alphanumeric ID or choose your seat from the provided map) and select OK.

   During a Learning Catalytics session, your instructor may refer to the seat map to check which students are answering correctly or having difficulty.

3. For a live classroom session, wait until your instructor makes the first question available to the class and then submit your response.

Your instructor controls whether your scores for graded Learning Catalytics sessions are reported directly to the Scores page of your Mastering course. Only graded Learning Catalytics sessions (whether for credit or extra credit) may be reported to Mastering.

1. From your LMS course on a computer, select the Mastering Scores page.
2. Look for your scores under the category LEARNING CATALYTICS.

   You will see --/-- until the session ends. After the session ends, it may take about a minute for your score to appear.

   Tip: When a Learning Catalytics session score is for extra credit, a note about this appears in the Notes column.

3. To review answers from the session, select the Learning Catalytics session name link. See below for more about reviewing answers from past sessions.

If you have a good reason for missing a graded Learning Catalytics session: To avoid losing credit, it's best to let your instructor know BEFORE the session due date if possible. Your instructor may choose to exempt you from that particular session score.

Reviewing past sessions you have completed can help you to study and prepare for exams. You can review both your responses and the correct answers. Note that polling questions may not have a "correct" answer.

Availability of the review feature

• You can review any Learning Catalytics session you have completed, unless your instructor withholds this capability for a session.
• Your instructor may set a waiting period before students can review a completed session.
• You must sign in from your computer (not a mobile device) to use this feature.

To access previous sessions for review

1. From the Mastering Scores page:
   Select the session name link to review graded Learning Catalytics sessions reported to your Mastering course.

   From the Mastering Course Home:
   Either select  Learning Catalytics (if there is NO active session available) or select  Join Session (if there IS an active session) and choose Join another session.

2. Choose Review older sessions from the Welcome page of Learning Catalytics.
   
3. Select the past session(s) you want to review. If a session is unavailable for review: The session name will not appear in the list of past sessions you can review.

   Your instructor may set a waiting period before you can review a past session.
