The Writer's Toolkit
The Writer's Toolkit in the composing space has the following components: Writing, Research, Tutor, Dictionaries and Thesaurus. Each component provides you with links to resources that help you strengthen your writing skills.
Writing links
The following is a typical list of Writing links, however the links are not the same for all courses:
- Writing Tips: These tips provide guidelines on the writing process, including brainstorming for ideas; defining your audience; writing introductions, paragraphs, and conclusions; and revising your work.
- Writing Samples: The samples cover different writing styles, such as writing to persuade or writing a research paper, a resume, or an email. For each style there are tips on how to use that style effectively complemented by sample documents.
- Grammar Podcasts: Regardless of your grammar skills, there's a podcast to answer any grammar question you might have. The podcasts present the information clearly with memorable examples and are just a few minutes in length.
- Grammar/Editing FAQs: This is a link that all writers, regardless of skill or experience, can use. The format is questions and answers on topics ranging from grammar and punctuation to usage.
- Commonly Confused Words: If you find yourself wondering whether to use then or than or whether it is spelled alot or a lot, this is the place to go. This is a comprehensive list of words that are commonly confused and misused.
- My eText: This is a link to your eText. Click the link to open the eText in a separate window. (My eText is displayed only when you are in an eText course.)
- My links: This list of links includes resources such as popular style guides, internet libraries, and federal statistics.
Research links
The following is a typical list of Research links, however the links are not the same for all courses:
- MLA guidelines, APA guidelines, and CMS guidelines: Click these links to access information and examples on the guidelines.
- Find Sources: Click this link to access the EBSCO ContentSelect Research Database. Use this reference tool to search for information across thousands of academic journals and periodicals and to access a comprehensive library of reputable, online sources.
- Cite Sources: Click this link to open the NoodleBib Bibliography Creator. NoodleBib helps you identify source material and create a bibliography that is APA, CMS, or MLA compliant. (This feature may or may not be available depending on the instructor's course settings.)
- Check Sources: Click this link to submit the open document to SourceCheck for an originality review. SourceCheck searches the Internet for content that matches your content and flags any found matches so you can make sure they are cited correctly.
Tutor link
- Connect With a Tutor: Select this option to access Pearson Tutor Services. As a subscriber to your MyLab, your initial submissions are free, and you can purchase service for additional submissions directly from the tutor service. Dictionaries and Thesaurus links
- Dictionary, Thesaurus, Spanish-English Dictionary: Enter the word you want to look up in the text box (the Dictionary makes a best guess to find the word if it is misspelled) and select the reference to use from the drop-down list. Then click the Search button.
