Create, Copy, or Link to a Course
There are three ways to set up a course: create a new one, copy an existing one, or link to an existing one.
- Creating a new course is the process of setting up a new course and specifying the course settings, including whether other instructors can copy or link to the course.
- Copying a course is the process of setting up a new course based on an existing course. The existing course can be one of your own courses or another instructor's course, assuming the instructor is allowing the course to be copied. When you copy a course, the new course will have links to any files uploaded in the original course.
Tip: Copying is particularly useful if you offer the same class several semesters running. Once the course is customized to your liking, you can copy it for the next semester's class. You can fully customize a copied course.
- Linking to a course creates a course that is based on an existing course. The linked
course is accessible to your students, but you cannot customize its
Study Plan or course copy properties. These settings are controlled by the originating
course (i.e., the one you are linking to). Any changes made to the Study
Plan or course copy settings in the original course are automatically reflected
in the linked course.
Tip: Linking is particularly useful when you have several sections for one class and want all sections to have the same settings from beginning to end.
Linked courses are also useful to course coordinators who want associated instructors to follow a specific plan or use the same course settings.
Note: If you choose not to create any courses, students can still work in the English MyLab on their own. However, you will not be able to see their grades.
For information on the settings that determine whether your course is available to other instructors for copying or linking to, see Edit Course Copy Properties.
