Control which computers can access assignments

You can restrict access to assignments to certain computers so that students can only open those assignments from a location you specify. This option is useful for tests, quizzes, or any assignment that you want students to complete from a controlled environment such as a computer lab.

To select locations from which students can open an assignment, you must first define one or more locations on the Preferences > Manage Locations page. To allow teaching assistants to define locations, enable the Manage computers and locations option in the Locations section on the Preferences > Permissions page.

To restrict an assignment to certain machines:

Go to the Assignment Calendar.

Locate and point to the asset whose availability you want to control. Click the down arrow to the right of the title to open the asset's options menu.

Select Properties or Assignment Properties from the asset's options menu.

Note: You can only assign assets that are visible to your students. If the asset or folder is currently hidden, click Yes at the prompt that asks whether you want to display and assign it.

Click to open the Advanced Options section and select an option:
- Do not restrict access. Allow this item to be accessed from any computer: Students can open the asset from any location.
- Restrict access to this item to the following locations: Students can only open the asset from the locations you specify:
  1. Select the locations, or, to select all locations, select the checkbox for Location in the All Locations list.
  2. Click Add.
  Tip: To remove a location you selected, select the location name in the Selected Locations list and click Remove.
Set any additional properties for the asset:
- To assign the asset, see Assign course materials using the options menu.
- To schedule when the asset is visible to students, see Schedule or restrict assignment availability.
- To assign or schedule the asset to certain students, see Control who can access assignments and when.
- To have the asset open full screen, open in a pop-up window, or require a password to open the asset, see Set assignment and asset properties.
When you finish, click Save and Close.
