Provide activity feedback
Updated 19 Feb 2024
When enabled, the activity Feedback page lets you select or create a feedback schema for the activity and create links to further study materials that are delivered to students based on their performance. Students view both the feedback and study materials on the activity results page. The Feedback page is optional.
The Feedback page is not available in all courses. If you do not see this page, you cannot add activity feedback in your course. The Feedback page appears only if you select Enable activity level performance-based feedback and further study tools on the course Preferences > Activities page. Instructors must enable this feature for teaching assistants.
To apply a feedback schema:
Do one of the following:
- Select a pre-defined schema from the Select Feedback schema list. This list contains the default feedback schema and any other available feedback schemas. You can add schemas on the Preferences > Activities page. Schemas can use either benchmark or raw scoring.
- Click Add new feedback schema to create a new feedback schema.Add a new feedback schema
- In the Add New Schema window, select a Schema Type. Options are Benchmark (percentage) or Raw Score (total points scored in activity).
- Enter the Feedback Schema Name and Description.
- Create score ranges for feedback:
- For benchmark schemas, enter the lower limit in (%) Score from, and the upper limit in (%) Score to.
The score range must be from 0 to 100 and the scores in ranges cannot overlap. For example, if you enter 0-79 as the first range, the next range must start at 80, not 79.
- For raw score schemas, enter the lower limit in Score from, and enter the upper limit in Score to.
The scoring ranges must be consecutive to the next highest whole number; there cannot be gaps between the ranges. For example, if the first range is 0 to 5, the next range must start at 6. Similarly, if the first range is 0 to 2.5, the next range must start at 3.
To add more grade ranges, click Add Schema. To delete a grade range, select it and click Delete Schema.
- For benchmark schemas, enter the lower limit in (%) Score from, and the upper limit in (%) Score to.
- Enter Feedback for each range.
- Click Save and Close.
After you add a schema, you can select it from the Select Feedback Schema list. When you make a selection, the defined threshold appears, including:
- From: The lower limit of the defined grade range, either as a raw score or benchmark %.
- To: The upper limit of the defined grade range, either as a raw score or benchmark %.
- Feedback: The feedback associated with the grade range.
You can then add study materials to each range to help students improve their performance or you can edit the schema.
- In the schema display area, click Add for the appropriate range.
- In the window, select the study materials you want to add.
- Click Add and Close.
The study materials you selected appear, along with the following details:
- Study Material name
- Study material Type
- Options menu that lets you preview or remove the study material.
Teaching assistants must have permission to access certain menu options. You set these options on the Preferences > Permissions page.
- Order icon that lets you reorder study materials
- Click the Edit Schema link that appears next to the Select Feedback Schema option.
- In the Update Feedback Schema window, make any necessary changes to the schema name, description, feedback, and scores.
- Click Save and Close.
To display feedback and study materials to students when they complete an activity, make sure you select the Display activity level feedback and remediation option in the Feedback section on the activity's Preferences page.
