Before scrambling questions and answer choices in a test, make sure that the sequence of content is not critical to understanding the test activity.

  1. From the MyTest page, select Create multiple versions and enter the number of test versions you want to create in the textbox. When you select this option and enter a number greater than 1 in the box, the following options become available:
    • Select Scramble question order to scramble the order of questions in each version of the test you download.
    • Select Scramble answer order to scramble the order of question answers in each version of the test you download.
    • Select Scramble question and answer order to scramble both questions and question answers in each version of the test you download.

Do not select the Scramble Within the Group option if you see it for Pearson-provided content; questions need to stay in the prescribed order to maintain the integrity of the tests.

  2. Select Include area for student response to indicate where students record answers to test questions. If you select this option, the following options become available:
    • Select As blank on left side of test (default) to provide a blank space to the left of each question for student answers.
    • Select On last page of test (separate answer sheet) to provide a separate answer sheet for student answers.
  3. Select Include answer key in to print an answer key for each version of the test you create. The answer key contains question numbers and the correct response for each question. If you select this option, the following options become available:
    • Select Separate file (default) to provide an answer key in one file and the test in another, or select Same file to provide an answer key as the last page of the file that contains the test.
    • Select Include answer feedback to include question feedback with the answer key.
    • Select Include question hints to include question hints you with the answer key. You can add hints when you create or edit test questions.
  4. Click Save settings above as default to save your download choices. Saved appears in green to the right of the link.  If you don't select this link, all options revert to their default settings.
  5. Click Download.
  6. Choose one of the following:
    • Download next to an individual test or answer key to open that file in Microsoft Word
    • Click Download all (zip) to download a compressed file that includes all tests and answer keys, if you included them.

When you download to Word, the result is a Word document formatted in tables. For detailed information on how to edit your test in Word, click the How to Edit the Word document link that appears above the test name on the Download page.

If you don't make any changes to a test in Microsoft Word, you do not need to save the test in Word; the test is always available in MyTest, which you can access from any computer. However, you may want to save a copy to share with others or to do further formatting.
