Create custom questions
Updated 28 Aug 2023
Before you can use the Create Custom Question wizard to set up your custom questions, run the one-time, Prerequite Install.
Access varies slightly depending on whether you have a MyLab or Foundations course.
- In the Homework/Test Manager, select Manage Custom Questions from the More Assignment Tools dropdown list.
- In the Custom Question Manager, click Create New Question.
Do either of the following:
- Display the Manage Assignments page. Next select Custom Question under Create or select Manage Custom Questions under Organize. Then click Create New Question.
- Create or edit an assignment and on Step 2 of the Assignment wizard, click Create my own questions.
Follow the three steps of the Create Custom Question wizard. Steps 2 and 3 vary slightly depending on your choice in Step 1.
- Copy and edit a question from your online course — Lets you select a question from your online course and edit its content. Not all questions are editable.
You can edit the wording of questions (including adding extra instructions), remove parts of questions, and edit some algorithms.
You also can convert algorithmic questions to static values.
Any learning aids (such as Help Me Solve This, videos, or animations) associated with the question are not available in the copied question.
- Copy and edit a question from the sample question bank — Lets you copy a question from the publisher-provided sample questions and then edit it to create a custom question. (This option is not available in all courses.)
- Start with an empty template — Lets you choose a blank template and then create your own question from scratch.
- Copy and edit a question from another instructor's account — Lets you select a question created by another instructor and then edit it to create your own custom question.
When you choose this option, you must provide the question author's login name in the text box. You can only see questions that the author has marked "Allow other instructors to copy and edit this question."

If you chose to copy from your online course or the sample question bank
- Select the book, chapter, section, and objective (if any) from the dropdown lists.
Each choice you make in a dropdown list refreshes the selections available in the dropdown lists below it and in the list of available questions associated with your choices.
If your textbook includes TestGen questions, optionally, select Show additional test bank questions to include questions that come from the TestGen test bank. These questions have been converted to run in the player, rather than requiring the TestGen plug-in. TestGen questions are static.
- Choose a question from the list of available questions. Click Preview to view the question in the player. (Publisher-provided learning aids are not available for copied questions.)
- Click Next to continue.
If you chose to start with an empty template
- Select one of the layouts as
the format for your question and answer:
- Full Screen layout lets you integrate the student answer with your question. If scrolling is necessary, the question and answer areas scroll together.
- Top/Bottom layout puts the question in the top window; the student enters the answer in the bottom window. If scrolling is necessary, the question and answer areas scroll separately.
- Left/Right layout puts the question area on the left and the answer area on the right. This format is useful for questions with lengthy questions and for questions that include graphs, charts, or figures. If scrolling is necessary, the question and answer areas scroll separately.
- Click Next to continue.
If you chose to copy from another instructor
- Select the question you want to copy from the list. (The list contains only the questions that other instructors have made available for copying.) Click Preview to view the question in the player.
- Click Next to continue.
See the main Custom Question Builder window. If:
- You copied a question, edit it here.
- You're creating your own question, compose it here.
Before you can select Create/Edit Question, you must run the one-time, prerequisite install.
