Define text and symbol answers
Updated 28 Aug 2023
Text and symbol answers include "solid", "x< 3", "(-4,∞)", "7 meters," and similar answers that are not algorithmic variables.
All answers that include text, symbols (such as inequality symbols), or special characters (such as infinity and Greek letters), must use the Answer is text or contains a symbol rule in the Edit Answer Definition wizard.
Hints to enter text and symbol answers in the Edit Answer Definition wizard
- Surround text answers and answers that include symbols with single or double quotation marks; for example, "circle" or 'circle'.
- To define several acceptable forms for an answer, list each form on a separate row in the Define Answers tab. For example, type "3 m" on the first line, type "3 m." on the second line, and type "3 meters" on the third line. Note that "three meters" is an incorrect answer.
- When your I-bar is visible in the row, right-click to get a menu where you can choose Editing Options to insert symbols and constants into an answer.
