Example: Use a table in an econ question

To create and format a table in a short answer question:

Create the question with a simple, unformatted table.

  1. Open the Custom Question Builder.
  2. Select Start with an empty template and click Next.
  3. Select the format Full and click Next.
  4. In the Custom Question Builder, enter the following in the problem statement area:

    The following table shows the distribution of income in France:

  5. Press Enter twice to move to a new line
  6. Click the table icon () to open the Insert Table window
  7. Specify 2 columns and 6 rows and click OK to insert the table into your question.
  8. Enter the following information in the table.

  9. Highlight Households and Income (percentage) and click the bold icon ().
  10. On a new line, enter the following text to begin the question:

    What percentage of national income is earned by the poorest 40% of households?

  11. Add one space after the text you entered and then click Short Answer.
  12. Go to Step 2 in the Edit Answer Definition window.
  13. Click in the row under Value in the table and enter 8.
  14. Click Next until you reach the last step, then click Save.
  15. To center the table, position your cursor to the right of the table.
  16. Click the Align Center icon in the toolbar.
  17. Click Preview Exercise to see how your question looks for your students.
  18. When you are satisfied with your question, dismiss the Preview window and click Save.
