Allow students to submit assignments late
You can permit late submission of an assignment, with restrictions or penalties, for all students or for individual students.

- In the Assignment Manager, find the assignment, select the 3-dot Options
menu, and choose Assignment settings.
- On the Choose Settings page, find the Scoring Options section and select Allow students to work and change score after due date and apply any restrictions or penalties.

- In the Assignment Manager, find the assignment, select the 3-dot Options
menu, and choose Student settings.
- On the Individual Student Settings page, select one or more students. See Change assignment settings for individual students

- For tests and quizzes, the penalty is applied to the score for the entire assignment. For homework, you can choose whether to deduct the penalty from the overall score or only from the score for any questions submitted after the original due date.
- A student's score before the penalty determines whether a prerequisite has been met.
- Actual scores, without the penalty, are used in item analysis reports.
- You can change a penalty before the due date. However, any students who already received the penalty must resubmit the assignment to change their scores.
- Penalized scores are not updated when you edit an assignment with a late-submission penalty (for example, by extending the due date). Students must resubmit the assignment with the new settings to change their scores.
- Late-submission settings are preserved when you copy the assignment or a course containing the assignment.
-
A penalty per day, from final score is applied immediately after the due date and time. For example: If you deduct 10% per day, the first 10% penalty applies immediately after the due date and time. The next 10% penalty is added 24 hours later. If an assignment is due at 3:00pm today, a student incurs a 10% penalty for submitting it any time after 3:00pm today (even 3:00:01pm). Another 10% penalty is applied after 3:00pm tomorrow.

After the due date, if you decide to allow students to submit late assignments with a penalty, you must temporarily move the due date forward to add the penalty.
- Open the assignment settings.
- Under Availability Options, change the due date to the future to make the late-submission penalty option available.
- Under Scoring Options, modify the penalty.
- Select Save to save the assignment with the new (temporary) due date and the new penalty.
- Return to the Availability Options section and restore the original due date.
- Select Save & Assign.

If the due date has passed, you need to temporarily move the due date forward to modify the penalty:
- Open the assignment settings.
- Under Availability Options, change the due date to the future to make the late-submission penalty option available.
- Under Scoring Options, modify the penalty.
- Under Availability Options, restore the original due date.
- Select Save & Assign.
Student scores do not automatically update. Students must resubmit the assignment for the score to change.
