Assignment results in Mastering
Updated 14 May 2024

Standard Mastering assignments are those that contain items from the Item Library.

See check student score, time, and difficulty for information about filtering and using assignment data in the Gradebook.
You can also export scores, times, and difficulty data from the Gradebook.

Diagnostic charts with score, time, and difficulty data for an assignment
You can sort chart data, filter out some kinds of data, and hide/show individual diagnostic charts. Use the Diagnostics charts to answer questions like:
- Which assignments and questions are working best in this course?
- Which questions are the hardest for my students?
- Which students are doing very well or poorly?
- Which students are completing the assignment unusually quickly or slowly?

For any standard assignment, the lower part of the assignment Overview page shows class statistics by assignment item for completed items. Use this data to answer the following questions:
- What's the average % score for my class on each assignment item?
- How long should it take to do a particular assignment?
- How difficult were the items?
(The difficulty rating is based on the number of correct and wrong answers submitted, as well as the number of hints requested.) - What were the most common wrong answer responses?
- How well did students in my course do on this item or assignment, compared with the system average of students worldwide?

You can review an individual student's work:
- For the entire course (Scores page)
- On a particular assignment (Assignment Grade page)
- On a specific item (Item Work page)
You can see per-student details for items and the course that help to answer these questions:
- How did a particular student answer a particular item?
- How long did a student take to submit a particular answer?
- At what time did the student give each answer?
- What wrong answer(s) did the student give?
- How well did a particular student do on a particular assignment?
- How well is the student doing over the entire course?

Assess learning outcome results
This data provides insight into how well students are performing toward your selected learning outcomes:
- Which learning outcomes are students struggling with the most?
- Are particular assignment items heavily influencing the learning outcome results?
- Have results on particular learning outcomes improved over time?

Some specialized assignments are available for all courses, and others are available depending on your course's textbook.

Detailed results from Adaptive Follow-Up assignments are reflected only in individual student performance pages, not in diagnostic or summary reports.

For Dynamic Study Modules, you can generate reports of student progress, which can help you identify and remediate trouble spots.

Scores from Learning Catalytics sessions can be automatically transferred to the Mastering Gradebook, but results details are presented only in the corresponding Learning Catalytics course.

No detailed results for Offline Activities are available in Mastering. In the Mastering Gradebook you see only scores that you entered into the Gradebook.
