Score calculations in Mastering
Updated 19 Feb 2024
Student scores and how they are displayed depend on a number of factors. Students can find information about how their scores are calculated in
A student's score on an assignment is the weighted average of all the item scores in the assignment.
- Only items for credit are counted in the student's average.
- For a pooled assignment, only the items that are given to the student are counted.More about pooled assignments
In a pooled assignment, each student is given a random subset of items from each pool in the assignment. See Pooled assignments: Create question pools.
- Item scores are weighted if items are worth different numbers of points.
Scores for Offline Activities and for questions in the following reserved categories are calculated differently:

Mastering calculates a student's total score based on two factors:
- How many points each assignment is worth (computed by summing the number of points each item in the assignment is worth)
- The weighting scheme applied to assignment categories and individual assignments in the course
Both Mastering and your settings determine how you and students see student scores.
- Until the assignment due date passes, partially completed assignments may not be reflected in the student's total and are not counted when calculating course statistics.
- You can choose whether student grades appear as points or percentages in your view of the Gradebook. Students always see their scores as percentages on their Scores page.
- Students' grades may not be equal to the average of their assignment scores because scores are averaged to approximately 9 significant figures, but are rounded for display.
- You can choose whether students can see their overall weighted grades by setting the value of Allow students to see their total score on the Course Settings page.
