Scores for Follow-Up assignments

Point values

When you set up the Adaptive Follow-Up assignment, you specify the number of possible points and the maximum number of question sets. The possible points are divided equally among all possible questions sets, and the points allocated to each question set are divided equally among all the Parts in the question set.

Example

In the illustration below, the Adaptive Follow-Up assignment is worth 10 points and contains a maximum of two question sets (5 points for each question set). The number of items doesn't matter, but within a single question set, all item Parts are worth the same point value. Because different questions sets can have different numbers of Parts, the individual Part values in one question set can differ from those of another question set.

Grading settings

Beyond the overall grading scheme described in the previous section, students' scores for each Part can be affected by Adaptive Follow-Up grading settings that add or deduct credit. Mastering gives you the flexibility to do any of the following:

Use the initial default Adaptive category settings, with no changes.
Change the initial default settings to establish your own defaults for the Adaptive category, which will be applied to all Follow-Up assignments added after you make changes.
Change these settings for one or more specific Follow-Up assignments.

Adaptive Follow-Up grading settings do not inherit values from the Parent assignment's grading settings. Settings for all Follow-Ups are governed by settings for the Adaptive category, along with any settings you change specifically for a given Follow-Up assignment. Grading settings for Parent assignments are likewise governed by the category to which the assignments belong (typically Homework), and any assignment-specific changes you make.

Varying amounts of work per student

The amount of work each student completes to receive points for an Adaptive Follow-Up depends on how well the student did on the Parent assignment, on the availability of Mastering items to address the student's areas of weakness, and on how soon the student demonstrates understanding of the material covered by the Adaptive Follow-Up.

Depending on need, some students are never given items to complete, some students are given only a few items, and other students are given more items.

Scoring status	Description
Test Out	If you allow students to Test Out with a score you specify when you add the Adaptive Follow-Up, students who score at or above that score automatically receive all available points for the Follow-Up, without having to complete any question sets.
Exempt	Students for whom the adaptive learning engine provides no recommendations see a message saying they are automatically exempt from the Adaptive Follow-Up assignment. They receive no points, but no penalty, as would be the case for a student who receives a manual exemption through an adjustment.
Complete after one or more question sets	When the adaptive learning engine has no more recommendations for an individual student, the Adaptive Follow-Up is complete, even if further question sets remain in the assignment. In addition to points earned on questions answered correctly, the student receives all remaining available points for question sets that were not populated with items.
Complete after all question sets	Other students will continue to receive question sets to strengthen their understanding until they have completed the maximum number of question sets that you specified. They receive points earned on questions they answered correctly.
