Add custom content: Edit or create items
Updated 19 Feb 2024
In addition to using publisher-provided content, you can add your own items to the course's Item Library by editing or creating assignable items. In Mastering, these are known as My Items. The easiest way to do this is with the Mastering Simple Editor.
- Simple Editor Basics: Edit text, add answer, add/delete part, add new answer type
- Simple Editor: Add hints, hyperlinks, images, and tables
- Simple Editor: Randomize values in questions (so different students see different values)
To add your own assignment as a Mastering assignment, see Freehand Grader assignments.
Assignable items
In Mastering, your customized items (items you edit, create, or import) are known as My Items. Until My Items are added to an assignment, they're visible in the Item Library only to the person who creates them.
Create your own My Items
- Copy and edit an item (usually a publisher-provided item)
Important: When you copy and edit a publisher item, this action creates a different item. Your customized item doesn’t replace the publisher item in the Item Library or in any assignments.
- Refer to Simple Editor Help for instructions about creating, editing, or importing items.
- Associate My Items with book chapters and sections
After you create My Items
- If you use learning outcomes in your course, create learning outcomes to associate with My Items. (Mastering doesn't provide learning outcomes for your custom items.)
- Filter your Item Library view for My Items to add them to assignments.
- Delete items you edited or created
If you plan to use Adaptive Follow-Up assignments in your course, be aware that My Items aren't counted as qualified publisher items.
