Create a writing assignment

You can create essay assignments in any content area.
- Open the Manage Assignments page for the content area.
- Select Writing Assignment from the Create list on the Manage Assignments page.
- In step 1, give the assignment a name and choose a unit, if available in your course.
- If you work in a learning management system, optionally check Send grades for this assignment to the LMS gradebook.
- In step 2, enter the assignment information on the tab pages.
- Select Continue to move through the tab pages.
- Select Finish to go to step 3 and choose homework settings.

Writing Skills essay activities (also called Write Drafting activities) are assignments that you create in the Writing Skills content area.
- Open the Manage Assignments page for the content area.
- Select Write Activity Prompt from the Create list on the Manage Assignments page.
- In step 1, give the assignment a name and choose a unit, if available in your course.
- If you work in a learning management system, optionally check Send grades for this assignment to the LMS gradebook.
- In step 2, select the Module, Topic, and Objectives to see the available prompts.
- Either choose a pre-existing prompt from the Available Prompts list or select Add my own prompt to create your own.
- Add your prompt(s) to the My Selections list.
- In step 3, choose homework settings.

Writing Space was retired early in 2022 and is replaced by Writing Solutions. Courses created before December 10, 2020, retain Writing Space until its full retirement, when all existing assignments are converted automatically to Writing Solutions. New and copied courses will use Writing Solutions.
If you are reusing course groups, recreate your course groups to avoid having Writing Space in older member sections and Writing Solutions in new member sections.
Writing Solutions offers most of the capabilities of Writing Space, but does not yet include peer review or multiple drafts.
