Import previous results
Updated 20 Sep 2022
You can import student scores and Extra Practice results from a previous course into your current course when the courses:
- Use the same textbook.
- Use different editions of a textbook.
- Use different textbooks with similar coverage.
When imported assignments differ, you may need to map assignments or Extra Practice objectives from the previous course to your current one.
Import Previous Results is not available in institutional courses.

- Open the Manage Grades page and select Import Previous Results from the More Tools list.
The Import Previous Results page displays the current settings. Check results for this date or later appears when you excluded student results prior to a specific date. Automatic import from courses using a previous edition appears when you set up automatic import of results from a course using a previous edition of your textbook or related books with similar coverage.
- In the Automatic Import section, select Edit.
- Choose how to import:
- Check Automatically import previous course results to automatically import results from courses using the same textbook. To disable automatic import, remove the check and select Update.
- Check From this date and later to exclude results received before the date you enter.
- Check From courses using a previous edition of this book or related books with similar coverage to choose a course to import from. Then choose the textbook and course from the lists.
- If needed, select Assignments not matched to see assignments from the previous course that could not be mapped to an assignment in the current course. Select Assignments matched to change automatic mappings.
- For unmapped assignments or mappings you want to change, select Change, then select the assignment to map to.

- Open the Manage Grades page and select Import Previous Results from the More Tools list.
- Select Import Results for the student whose results need to be imported.
- Select whether to import all the student's scores or to exclude results with instructor-submitted grades of zero.
- Select the course to import from and select Find Results to Import.
- Optionally select Import student mastery from the selected course to overwrite the student's current mastery status with the status achieved in the previous course.
- If needed, edit the mappings in the Assignment Results table:
- Title-based matches lists assignments with the same name but not the same questions. Only scores are imported for these assignments.
- Exact one-to-one matches: Lists assignments where the name and the questions in the assignment match. Both scores and student work are imported.
- Other results: Lists assignments that do not appear in the current course. To import results for these assignments, you need to map them to assignments in the current course.
- If needed, map the assignments by selecting assignment's previous results and choosing an assignment in your current course to import the scores into.

- The assignment score, submission date, and results from multiple attempts are imported. If the assignment is exactly the same in both courses, time spent and results on individual questions are also imported.
- If you map an assignment with a different number of questions, only scores are imported.
- If an imported assignment contains questions that were scored as correct, only the assignment score and the date submitted are imported for those questions.
- When you import Extra Practice results, you see all Extra Practice work, skills mastered and needing study, and sample test results. Results for offline assignments and writing assignments are ignored.
- If a student successfully completed assignments in the previous course that are prerequisites for assignments in the current course, the results are applied accordingly.
- Mappings done in a coordinator course are inherited by the member sections in the course group.
- Complete records of assignment and Extra Practice results remain in the previous course. If the student re-enrolls in the previous course, the results are restored.
