Set prerequisites for assignments
Updated 15 Sep 2022
You can require students to complete one or more assignments before they can work on another assignment. If you specify a minimum score on a prerequisite, students cannot access the other assignment until they achieve that score.

- Open the Manage Assignments page for the content area.
- Under Organize in the list of tasks, select Set Prerequisites by Assignment.
- Above the table, optionally use the filters to display assignments by category, module, and topic.
- On the Set Prerequisites page, choose whether to use basic settings (one prerequisite) or advanced settings (multiple prerequisites).

- In the Basic view of the Set Prerequisites page, select Change under Prerequisite Item for an assignment.
- From the Prerequisite Item list, select the assignment to be the prerequisite or select None to delete a prerequisite.
- Optionally enter a minimum score the student must achieve to satisfy the prerequisite.
- If you are setting a prerequisite for an assessment, choose what attempt to apply the prerequisite to.

- In the Advanced view of the Set Prerequisites page, select Change under Prerequisite Item for an assignment.
- From the Prerequisite Item lists, select one or more assignments to be the prerequisite(s) or select None to delete a prerequisite.
- Optionally enter a score the student must achieve to satisfy each prerequisite.
- If you are setting a prerequisite for an assessment, choose what attempt to apply the prerequisite to.
When you allow multiple attempts at an assessment, you can set different prerequisites for each attempt.
- Optionally select Add alternate prerequisites to choose one or more assignments that students can fulfill instead of the initial prerequisites.
Important: If you make advanced settings and then choose Basic settings, you are asked whether your advanced settings should be deleted:
- Select Yes to retain the first prerequisite for any assignment and remove all the others, including those set in previous sessions.
- Select No to retain all prerequisites and open the page in Basic mode.

You can automatically create a chain of prerequisites within a module or topic/lesson. Each assignment is a prerequisite for the assignment that follows, except that content area, module, and topic/lesson assessments are not included in the prerequisite chains.
Prerequisites for writing assignments apply only to the first draft. You cannot set prerequisites for Learning Catalytics or Reading Level assignments.
- Open the Manage Assignments page for the content area.
- Under Organize in the list of tasks, select Auto-assign Prerequisites by Module or Topic.
- Above the table, optionally use the filters to display assignments by category, module, and topic.
- Choose whether to assign prerequisites by modules or topics. If you choose topics, select a module from the list to display the topics it contains.
- Select individual modules or topics or select the box in the first column heading to select all modules or topics.
- Optionally enter a minimum score the student must achieve to satisfy the prerequisite.
- Select Update to save your prerequisites and select Cancel/Done to return to the Manage Assignments page.
You can view your prerequisites on the Set Prerequisites page.

You can check whether your prerequisites have been assigned and are available before the assignment due date.
- On the Set Prerequisites page, select Review Due Dates & Assigned Status.
- On the Prerequisite Details page, check for any warnings displayed in red.
