Review submissions

After you open the View Submissions window, you can view student answers, evaluate questions that need manual grading, submit assignments for students who postponed their own submissions, and manage other submission functions.

If you open the View Submissions window by selecting View All Submissions from a gradebook column on any Gradebook page, one of the following messages appears:

Tip: To prevent students from viewing submissions for an activity, select Hide Submissions on the activity column options menu on the Gradebook > Grades Grades > Instructor Gradebook page.

Navigate the View Submissions window

Depending on the design of your course, the View Submissions window may display a Students list with the names of students in the course or a Questions list of activity questions for which students submitted an answer.

To view submissions by student:

  1. Open the View Submissions window.
  2. Click Students in the top-left corner of the left pane.
  3. To show only students that submitted the activity, click Hide unsubmitted activities at the bottom of the list. Click Show unsubmitted activities to display all students and all attempts.
  4. Click the expand icon (+) to the left of the student name.

    All student submissions for a given activity appear. The submission that appears on the Gradebook > Grades page appears in bold font. Submissions that did not achieve a passing grade appear in red.

    Student attempts appear with a number, submission date and time, type, and either a grade or a status:

    Each student attempt also displays one or more icons that reflect the attempt status:

  5. Click a submission to open it in the preview pane.
  6. To expand the preview pane, click Hide List at the top-left of the student list. To open the Student List, click View List.

To view submissions by question:

  1. Click Questions at the top left of the left pane.
  2. Click the expand icon (+) to the left of the question.

    A list of students who submitted a response to the selected question appears, along with each of their submissions.

  3. Click a submission to preview it.
  4. To expand the preview pane, click Hide List at the bottom of the student list. To open the Student List, click View List.

Messages

The following table displays all messages about student submissions that you might see in the gradebook:

Message Cause

Activity has not been started

Student has not started the activity.

Click Hide unsubmitted activities at the bottom of the list to show only submitted attempts.

Activity has been started but not yet submitted

Student started the activity but has saved it for later or has not yet submitted the activity.

Click Submit Student Answers to submit the activity for the student; this action is also called a "forced submission."

This submission is incomplete due to a network error

The submission was interrupted by an application error or crash and the submission is incomplete. Have the student resubmit the activity or, if the problem persists, contact Pearson 24/7 customer support.

This submission is past due

Student submitted the activity after the due date.

Click Accept Submission to accept the submission and include the activity grade in the gradebook.

There are multiple past due submissions for this activity

Student has multiple late submissions for an activity.

Click Accept All Submissions to accept the submissions and include the activity grade in the gradebook.

View Submissions not available for activities with anonymous submissions

The activity preference to make student submissions anonymous is selected. To protect anonymity of submission status, the gradebook column for anonymous activities displays "Anon" whether or not the student submitted the activity.

Filter submission list

You can use the View menu in the top-left corner of the View Submissions window to filter the list by:

Preview pane

If a preview of a submission is not available, the preview pane indicates why the preview is unavailable. When the submission is available, you can review the submission details that appear at the top of the preview pane. You may see any or all of the following details:

Note: Sending messages from the View Submissions window is not enabled in your course. Instead, click Communication Tools > Email to send a message to a student.
