Create tests
Updated 19 Feb 2024
Use the MyTest page to create printed tests. You create the tests by adding questions from the Question Bank or by creating new questions.
If your course does not include a MyTest page, you can create tests as you would create any activity on the Course Materials page.
You can add the following question types to MyTest printed tests: essay, fill-in-the-blank, matching, multiple choice, multiple response, and true/false. (MyLab IT olny)
You can add the following question types to MyTest printed tests: essay, fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, matching, and voice recording. (MyLab Languages only)
To create a test you:
Create and name tests
- Click MyTest.
- In the Manage your Tests list, click Create New Test.
- Enter the test Name.
The name should not include special characters, such as asterisk (*) or ampersand (&).
- Select the Activity Type you want to use for the test when it is presented on-line.
- Click Create Test. The blank test opens on the right side of the page and the test name appears above the toolbar. You are now ready to add questions to the test.
If you create and name a test, and then click Close or View all tests, the newly created test is discarded.
Add questions
Testbanks are typically arranged as a series of folders that follow the structure of the chapters in the textbook.
If your testbank has folders that contain subfolders, you must open the folder to add questions from the subfolders to the test. You can add multiple questions and subfolders at once. If a folder contains questions and subfolders and you select to add the folder, only the questions in the folder are added to the test. The questions in the subfolders are not added to the test. (MYITLab only)
You can add questions to your test in any of the following ways:
You can drag individual questions or you can drag a folder. If you drag a folder, all questions in the folder are added to the test.
- Browse the testbank on the left to view the questions. To open a folder, click the folder name or the expand icon.
- Position your cursor over the activity or question group you want to add and make sure your cursor changes to a hand.
- Click the activity or question group and then drag it from the testbank to the test.
- Release the mouse button to drop the activity or question group in your open test.
To create new test questions, click Create Question/Group and choose a question type. For details on creating different question types, see:
- Essay (MyLab Languages only)
- Fill-in-the-blank
- Matching
- Multiple choice
- Multiple response
- True/false (MyLab IT only)
The number of questions in your test appears under the test name. A test can include up to 500 questions.
Save tests
If you make any changes to an open test, a message appears above the open test to indicate the test has unsaved changes.
To save your test at any time, click Save and choose an option:
- Save: Save the open test and continue modifying it.
- Save a copy as: Save the test with a new name, and then click Save and Close to return to modifying it.
- Save and Close: Save and close the test, and view the Manage Your Tests list.
When you save a test created with MyTest, it is automatically stored in the MyTest folder in the Course Materials Library. After you save your test, you can download and print it.
Close tests
You can click the Close button in the top-right corner of the open test window to close an open test. If the test has unsaved changes, you are prompted to save or discard the changes. Select from these options:
- Save: Saves any changes that you made to the test, and displays the Manage Your Tests list.
- Don't Save: Closes the test without saving changes, and displays the Manage Your Tests list.
- Cancel: Leaves the test open without saving changes.
View all tests
From an open test, you can view all tests you created by clicking the View all tests button above the test name. If the open test has unsaved changes, you are prompted to save or discard the changes. After you save changes, the Manage Your Tests list appears.
The list provides details for each test you created, including the test name, number of questions, creation date, and date the test was last modified.
