Set choice properties
Updated 28 Aug 2023
The Edit Multiple Choice window contains two tab pages that let you set options for your multiple-choice and true/false answers and define the feedback your students see when they do the question.
To access the Edit Multiple Choice window, put your cursor in any row of a multiple-choice or true/false answer. In the Multiple Choice Options window, click Feedback and Settings.
Select Override Default and use the box to change the number of times students can attempt to answer the question in a homework assignment before the question is marked incorrect.
Use # of Columns to change the number of columns in your multiple choice table. For example, if you enter 2 in this box, your choices display in two columns:
Use the Distractor Label Position dropdown list to position the radio buttons that students click to enter the answer. Left puts the radio buttons to the left of the corresponding answers; Top puts the radio buttons above the corresponding answers. Top is useful when graphs, number lines, charts, and figures are in the choices.
Use the Distractor Label Type to add numbers or letters as labels for the choices. Letter puts A, B, C, and so on next to the radio button; Number puts 1, 2, 3, and so on. None presents the choices without labels and they are referenced based on their position in the question. For example, if a student selects the second answer on a test and it is incorrect, the student's answer is called "the second choice."
In the Authoring Notes box, you can enter any comments about the question to help you edit it later.
In the Incorrect Answer Feedback box, enter the message to display when students select the wrong answer.
In the Correct Answer Feedback box, enter the message to display when students select the right answer.
For both correct and incorrect answer feedback, you can click View Default Message to see the standard message that displays if you do not supply a custom message.
In both boxes, you can right-click and select Editing Options to see a menu that lets you format the text or insert objects:
- Select Format to bring up a standard list of text-formatting options.
- Select Table to bring up a standard list of table options.
- Select Insert to add a horizontal line, a picture, a symbol, or a link to a web page.
- Select either Insert Object > Algorithmic Values or Insert Object > Equation Editor to add new or predefined algorithmic values or equations.
Click Save to save your choices.
