Add an external website as a menu item
In some courses, you can add a website as a course menu item. When you select the menu item, the website opens in the content pane.
You can't embed a YouTube video as a course menu item. See instead Insert a YouTube video on a content page.
- If available in your course, select Manage Course so that Edit Course Menu becomes active.
- Select Add page.
- For Page name (Required), enter a name.
- For Content Type, select Link.
- To control whether students see the menu item, use Visible to students.
- For Link, enter a URL that begins with https://.
For security reasons, it's best practice to use a site that begins with https://, not http://.
- Select Add to create the new menu item.
- To test the new menu item, select it from the course menu to see if the website shows in the content pane.
Important: Some websites might not allow their site to load within a different site or software. For example, you cannot use the Link option for a YouTube video.
The new external website menu item displays at the bottom of the course menu. You can rearrange its position. You can also rename the menu item, hide/show the menu item to students, archive the menu item or restore/delete the menu item.
- Select Manage Course from the main menu.
- Find the menu item in the list, using to find the item, if necessary.
- Select Edit.
- Edit the page name.
- Edit the URL link. Include https://, and confirm the URL string is correct.
Note: For the greatest security, it's best practice to use https addresses. If you know that the website is incompatible with https addresses, use an http address instead.
- Select Save.
