Upload documents for sharing
In some courses, instructors and section instructors can use the Document Sharing tool to upload and share documents, presentations, audio/video files with the class. The uploaded files are stored in folders you set up.
Class participants can then download the files you uploaded or upload their own documents to share.
- No special characters in file names — A message lets you know if a file or folder name contains any special characters, such as & $ % # @ * ( ).
- Keep file names unique — If you plan to link to uploaded shared documents, do not upload the same file name more than once within a course. Delete the old one before uploading a file with the same name.
- File size — To ensure that a file uploads successfully, limit the size to 100 MB. For files larger than 100 MB, you can add a link to it on a content page.
- If available in your course, select Document Sharing from the course menu, or in some courses, after selecting Course Tools or Communication Tools.
- Select an existing folder to contain the uploaded document or create a new folder. (Optional)
To create a Document Sharing folder — Select Create folder, add a name, choose whether to share with the class, add a description (70 characters max), and select Proceed. Now you can select this folder.
- To upload files, either:
- Drag one or more files onto the Documents space or into a folder.
- Select Upload, browse to locate the file, then select Open.
Share the document with the class — Select Shared with class if you want to share it.
Zip files — You can upload a compressed ZIP file. Class participants can download the ZIP file and expand its contents.
- Select the check box for the file or folder you want to download.
- To download a single file or folder — Select for the file or folder, then select Download.
- To download multiple files, folders or a combination — Select the check box for each file or folder you want, then select Download from the top of the page.
- Drag the downloaded file to a location on your device.
Zip files — If you download a compressed ZIP file, you’ll need to expand its contents.
You can edit the description of any shared document.
To edit the content of a shared document:
- Open the document in its native application and edit it.
For example, edit a presentation in PowerPoint.
- Delete the current shared document and upload the replacement document.
If you no longer want to share a document, delete it so it can no longer be downloaded by others or show in course copies.
Don’t delete shared documents for which you have added links in the course, since this causes those links to break (like in a content page or assignment).
- Select the check box for the folder and/or file for the document you want to delete.
- To delete one shared document or folder — Select to open the Doc Sharing menu, then select Delete.
To delete multiple shared documents or folders — Select the check box for each item, then select Delete from the top of the page.
