Ask questions
Asking questions with Live Response helps you evaluate what students already know and what they still need to master.

- Select Ready for students to join? at the bottom of the Live queue.
- Choose a course from Select a course list.
- Select Start session to begin the session.
A Join button appears in students' Live Response course.
At the top of the Live queue, you see the number of students who have joined.
- Select the Deliver icon
for individual questions or for a question group to deliver them to students.
As students answer questions, their responses appear on your Live results page.
Delivering a question or question set hides any previous questions from students, so students see the same question(s) at the same time.
You can manually hide or unhide a question using the hide/show icons, or
, next to a question in the Live queue. Hiding a question removes it from the student view.

After you begin a session, you can monitor student progress in the Live results page. In Live results, you can use presentation mode to display a question, responses, and correct answers to the class.
You can also use the Live Response presentation mode app to display both the Live Response window and questions in a presentation product of your choice; for example PowerPoint. This option lets you move between windows to send or resend questions, set up chat groups, and add more questions without leaving presentation mode.
Open presentation mode in the Live Response window
- Select the presentation icon
at the top of the Live queue.
Open presentation mode with the Live Response app
-
Select Help>Download Live Response Presentation Tool to download the app.
-
Select the presentation icon
at the top of the Live queue to start a session.
-
A purple bar and percentage show student responses to the current question.
- A green bar with a check mark indicates the correct answer.
-
For written response questions, you can switch between viewing responses as a bar chart or as a word cloud, both live and in presentation mode. Like bar charts, correct answers are green and incorrect answers are purple. The word cloud refreshes as students submit answers.
Manage a presentation mode session
Use the control panel at the bottom of the window to manage the session. You can:
- Use Show/Hide responses to display or hide student responses.
- Select Provide answer to send the correct answer to students. This option also grades student responses and sends the grade to each each student.
- Select Resend question to have students respond to each question again.
- Choose Individual students to resend the question to each student for response.
- Choose To group (chat) to divide students into chat groups so they can discuss the question before responding.
When you resend a question, a second progress bar appears below the initial result.
On their Live Response page, students are prompted to respond again.

When you resend a question, you can group students into discussion groups before they resubmit their responses. Live Response automatically assigns students into groups of 3, 4 (preferred), or 5 students depending on class size. At least one member of each group gave the correct answer in the first round, if possible.
The chat automatically ends after all students respond or you select End chat to manually end the chat.
The Live Response student help provides more information on participating in a chat.

Select End session in your Live queue. Session results appear on the Reports page and you can select a report to see details.
When you end a session, students can no longer see or answer questions. They can review question responses on their Live Response page, in the Past reports table.
