Video: Working with Learning Catalytics scores
Student scores for a Learning Catalytics session are governed by settings, point values you select for the module, and how many times you deliver the same question(s) in a single session.
When a question is delivered multiple times in a session, the total points possible is the point value of the question, multiplied by the number of times it's delivered.
After students respond to questions, they see scores for their automatically graded questions at the top of their session review page.
You need to grade any questions that can't be automatically scored.
Automatic and manual grades appear in the Learning Catalytics Gradebook. Students do not have access to this gradebook.
You can transfer scores to your Pearson course gradebook if you have one. Students in Mastering see their scores on their individual scores page.
Set scoring for Synchronous, Self-Paced, and Self-Test (individual score only)
Scoring options are the same for Instructor-Led Synchronous, Automated Synchronous, and Self-Paced modules, and similar for Self-Test modules.
Any edits to a module's scoring affect scores for all sessions, including previous sessions of the same module in the same course.
- If you don't want to affect scores for sessions you've already delivered, copy the module, then change the scoring on the copied module.
You can award points for correctness only, participation only, or proportionally for both. Click and drag the pointer left or right to adjust the weighting.
Students need to answer the question to get credit for participating. Just joining the Learning Catayltics session is not enough.
You can set a point value for each question in all modules except Team-Based Assessments. Point values can be any positive integer or zero.
- The default value for an automatically scored question is 1.
- The default value for a question that is not automatically scored is 0.
You can change default values or give point values to individual questions.
The point values you assign are saved with the module, not with the question itself. If you select the same question from the question library for a different module, its value defaults to 1 or 0, as described above.
If you give points for a question that is not automatically scored: you must manually mark each student's answer as correct or incorrect. You can't give partial credit.
If you don't give points, you don't need to mark a question.
- If you copy a module, the point values are preserved in the new module.
- The copy is a different module. You can change point values independently in the original module and the copy.
- Changes to scoring affect scores in all sessions of the same module, including sessions you have already delivered. If you want two different scoring schemes, copy the module/
To see whether a module has any questions that must be manually scored, preview it.
Any question without an answer must be manually scored unless its point value is 0.
- From the Learning Catalytics course's dashboard (list of modules), click a module's settings and select Edit.
- In the list at the bottom of the module page, click a question to open it in the preview window.
The correct response, if any, appears above the Answer section.
The Answer section shows what students see when they review the session.
In a Team-Based module
-
All questions must be automatically scored.
- All questions have the same point value.
- In Round 1 (Individual round), each correct answer is worth the same number of points.
- That number is the same as the maximum number of points for each question in Round 2 (Team round).
In the Team round, you set the number of attempts and the points awarded for each attempt. For instance, you might set the maximum credit to be 4 points and the number of attempts at 3. A correct answer on the first attempt is worth the maximum number of points. Later attempts are usually worth fewer points. (You can customize this.)
In addition, each student's final score is affected by the weighting you assign to Individual vs Team performance.
Click and drag the slider to adjust the percentage weighting:
To view results and responses, manually mark answers, and edit scores, first stop the session.
Mark non-automatically scored questions correct or incorrect
For questions that aren't automatically scored, student answers are considered incorrect by default.
You can manually change it to correct.
Review the results by
- Stopping a current session. Results for the session appear automatically.
- Select the gear icon for the session module and select Review results. If multiple sessions of the module have been delivered, select the session you want to review.
-
Use the question navigator to show the first question that hasn't been automatically scored.
Initially, all student answers have a red background.
-
Mark an answer correct, if appropriate. You can also add a Comment.
If you make a mistake, select Mark as incorrect.
You can also click Mark all as correct or Mark all as incorrect.
You do not need to manually mark questions worth 0 points.
However, if you allow students to review their results, they'll learn more if they know whether their answer is correct.
You do need to mark questions worth 1 or more points.
Otherwise, students won't get credit for correct answers.
To edit any student's session score, click the score in the Gradebook and enter a new score.
Editing a session score is not the same as marking individual answers correct or incorrect, but it gives you a way to adjust a student's score for a session. For example, when a student's answer to a complicated question was nearly correct, you can add to the overall session total without interfering with the student's ability to review her responses and see that her answer wasn't absolutely right.
You can also reduce a student's session score if you feel it is warranted.
Important: The new score you enter here is a fixed value. If you later edit point values in the module, the student's score won't change.
If you transfer scores to Mastering, you can exempt a student from a Learning Catalytics session:
-
In the Mastering Gradebook, click the student's score for the session from which you want to exempt the student.
- In the Assignment Grade page for the student, under Adjust Settings for this Student, click the check box to Exempt Student from this Assignment.
- Click Save.
