Independent work (Self-Paced and Self-Test)
Updated 05 Mar 2024
In independent work, students respond to questions individually in class or outside of class.
- Self-Paced: Students respond individually to questions in any order, without receiving any feedback. This response type works well for in-class quizzes.
- Self-Test: Students respond individually to questions in any order and receive feedback on each of their responses. This response type works well as interactive worksheets in class, or as homework to be completed outside of class.

Unlike Mastering assignments, Learning Catalytics assignments don't appear on students' Mastering Course Calendar or Assignments list.
When you assign a session for outside of class, use a Mastering announcement to notify students. Include the start and end times as well as the date.

You can optionally predefine the period when the module is available by setting a Start at time and an End at time. For homework, generally give a day or more.
- In class, these values serve as a timer.
- Outside of class, these are availability dates/times.
Full descriptions of the options are in Add a Learning Catalytics module.

If you have not established a Start at time, manually start a session for the module. This works well for modules that students work on in class.
Tip: Whenever you start a session, check the breadcrumbs at the top of the page to confirm that you are delivering the module from the correct course.

If you're delivering a Self-Paced module in a course associated with a seat map, you can ask students to indicate their seat when they join a session. You see their responses to automatically scored questions on the seat map, and gauge how well students have understood the material.

Select Stop session to allow students to review their own responses and the correct answers for questions.
Stopping the session also sends scores to the Learning Catalytics Gradebook, and optionally to your MyLab or Mastering course.
