Mechanism Substructure evaluator to grade chemistry answers
Updated 30 Aug 2024
Use the Mechanism Substructure answer evaluator (expressionOchemEvalMechSubstructure) to check if the student answer contains both the substructure and curved electron-flow arrows indicated by the mechanism question. The substructure can include atoms of unspecified elements.
- Select Grade as Correct or Grade as Incorrect, then enter the conditions you want to be checked in student answers.
- Select does not contain or contains for the "if" condition you will define.
- Identify the substructure and electron flow arrows to check. You can either create or copy these conditions.

- Choose whether to ignore one or more matching aspects.
- Ignore charge – Ignore the matching charge when comparing the substructure match.
- Ignore radical state – Ignore the presence of radical electrons when looking at the substructure match.
- Ignore isotope state – Ignore the matching isotope labels when looking at the substructure match.

Select Show this response to enter wrong answer feedback for when the student’s answer matches a Grade as Incorrect condition.
Use your keyboard and options from the editing toolbar and menus. Wrong answer and follow-up text can include an image, link, and formatted text like bullets or TeX.
