Start an assessment

When you select to take an assessment, you generally see the Are you ready to start page? first. However, if there is more than one version of the assessment, you first have to choose which version of the assessment to take.

The "Are you ready to start?" page displays information about the assessment you are about to take, such as whether you can take it again. Review this information before starting the assessment. To close the "Are you ready to start?" page without starting the assessment, select Cancel.

When you select Start:

The assessment opens in the MyLab player and displays the first question. You can proceed with taking the assessment.

collapsedDetails on the "Are you ready to start?" page

Depending on how the instructor set up an assessment, the "Are you ready to start?" page might display a message or a warning.

  • You have ## minutes left to complete this assignment. This is a timed assessment and you must complete it within the specified amount of time.
  • You can save this test to work on later. You can start work on the assessment, then exit and return later to complete it.

You can complete some questions, save your answers, and exit the assessment. The question you're working on must be saved before you can save and exit the assessment. When you later resume work on it, you can answer questions that you did not answer in the first session. However, you cannot review or change the answers you made in the first session.

If you don't see this message, you have to complete the test in a single session. To give you an idea of how long the test will take, the number of questions on the test is displayed below the test's name.

  • This test must be taken with the Pearson LockDown Browser. You will have to install this browser, before you can take the test.

The Pearson LockDown Browser is not compatible with the JAWS screen reader. If you use JAWS, do not install the Pearson LockDown Browser. Instead, contact your instructor for assistance. Also, see Set up the player for JAWS for instructions on setting up the player to work with JAWS. You'll need to take complete the assessment on a laptop or desktop system.

  • If you see a red warning icon and Late Submission Penalty, you lose points for handing in the test late. If the test is not late, you see how your score would be affected by late submission. If you handed in the assignment late, you see how many points you lost.

If you need help with answering assessment questions or using the player, select the player's Help icon Help.
